Just how easy is it to silence your critics on the Internet by using the DMCA? Apparently, very easy indeed. Yesterday, a writer who reports on religion and current affairs had his entire website taken offline after he allegedly breached the copyright of the operator of a Facebook page. His crime? Reproducing a 16-word Facebook posting made by his copyright adversary that accused an anti-racist, anti-fascist organization of being worse than pedophiles.

It is not uncommon for individuals and groups opposed to tougher copyright laws to voice concerns that their implementation has implications for freedom of speech. Equally, it is not uncommon for pro-copyright groups to claim that tougher laws are not targeted at taking away people’s voices, but to stop online infringement.

Unfortunately this tale is not a new one and there's no rush to amend the law to stop such blatant censorship, this is of course the end result of apathy by most citizens when asked to support rebuttals to many of the false claims put forward to get such laws in place, truth and justice always take a back seat to corruption in high places.
The stark reality is joe/josephine citizen is all too busy wondering where the next meal is coming from to take the time to defend their rights given in the constitution, while their so called "representative" politicians are endlessly busy working for profit for their non-voting pay masters.

Bad laws stem from bad representatives.

and apathy as you said.

Apart from just wondering where their next meal is coming from, they'd also be wondering what a dmca is.
Society tends not to rebel when we are picked off one at a time for something most don't understand, only when we are oppressed on mass.
How many women had potentially amazing lives cut short by the church for being a witch? One at a time for reasons most don't understand.
