Police in Sweden carried out a raid in Stockholm today, seizing servers, computers, and other equipment. At the same time The Pirate Bay and several other torrent-related sites disappeared offline. Although no official statement has been made, TF sources confirm action against TPB.

this isnt a 'reprint' of an old story... the pirate bay is down... maybe permanently....

granted many stopped using it -- it was still fun to have it around as a thorn in the copyright cartels side...

This is likely to annoy many folks especially given the false claims made to obtain the server, we all know Sony don't own any magnet files and that's all the bay stored.

The actual content of the site, the web pages, aren't hosted on the server they took down. All they got was a reverse proxy.

Peter Sunde: The Pirate Bay Should Stay Down

More than 24 hours have passed since The Pirate Bay was raided by Swedish police. While it's still unclear how hard the site was hit, not everyone is mourning its troubles. Many of the people who built up the site are happy to see it gone, former spokesperson Peter Sunde included.

I read what he said on his own blog the other day but like he says, he isn't involved with the site anymore and hasn't been for years. He already said he thought the site would go down on its 10th birthday and instead that date came and went and the site was kept online.

The current owners of the site haven't been named. They'll likely put it back up cause it's a cash cow. I expect they're currently looking for a new host to take on the front face of the site, the reverse proxy everyone connects to.
