just ridiculous

The lawsuit comes as states across the nation partner with legal research companies to offer exclusive publishing and licensing deals for digitizing and making available online the states' reams of laws and regulations. The only problem is that the law is not copyrightable—or so says one of the publishers involved in the Georgia litigation. In this instance, District of Columbia-based legal publisher Fastcase wants a judge to fend off a cease-and-desist demand from rival Virginia-based Lawriter, which has been designated as the exclusive publisher (PDF) of Georgia's compilation (PDF) of the rules and regulations of its state agencies.

The law belongs to the people who have after all paid for its creation and upkeep since such mechanisms of society where created, ascribing a publishing licence to anyone is whats wrong here, if we saw a move away from misusing copyrights as a transferable asset such ludicrous events would never come to pass as those who styled the wording of the law would be too many and most likely dead to state any claim. this is the same type of poor usage of the law that allows record companies to profit from an artists work without doing anything more than act as a bank manager, such legal trickery is flawed at a basic level in my view.
