Pirate Bay Site Ads Spreading Malware

Over the past few hours Chrome and Firefox and Safari have started to block access to Thepiratebay.se due to reported security issues.
Instead of a page displaying the iconic pirate ship, visitors are presented with an ominous red warning banner.

Google’s safebrowsing page for TPB currently lists the site as dangerous. It is likely that the current problems are related to issues caused by third-party advertisers. Just last week Malwarebytes reported that some ads were dropping ransomware through the site.

It would be a shame to feel that this is all about money for those running the bay at this time, surely they know that given enough bad publicity the users will simply go elsewhere, something they should ensure does not occur.

From what I understand the cartels have made it impossible for the pirate bay to use legitimate ad networks. And they cannot accept donations easily, only bitcoin which no one who uses the pirate bay to get files would know how to use (it's after-all a bottom of the barrel torrent site). So they've turned to this.

Honestly at this point the site only serves as a shield for other pirate sites. With all the focus that TPB gets it helps take some of the heat off smaller sites that are higher quality. So for that I hope they stay around a very long time being that beacon that attracts all the worlds anti-piracy like moths to a flame.
