Jersey Suffers Net Cable Damage
« on: November 29, 2016, 09:30:16 pm »
Always a bit suspicious when more than one cable gets damaged at once... but heres the news  :S

Quote
A ship dragging its anchor on the seabed in the English Channel has cut the three main internet cables to the Channel Islands overnight.
Broadband speeds are expected to be slower as a result and cable owners JT, Sure and BT say it could take up to three weeks to repair.

Telecom company JT says engineers have been dispatched to repair the cables. Jersey's coastguard says there will be an investigation to see if the ship dropped anchor in a banned area.

This sort of activity is often associated with a network "tap" away from the publicised break, tampering would be detected if the cable was simply spliced into while it was in usage so a simple ruse is to break the cable in another place and give yourself time to install an unmonitored and covert "tap", this is just the sort of activity the NSA undertake across the globe but it would be wise not to forget other countries want to harvest some of that juicy data also
