The right idea?
« on: January 14, 2006, 02:53:53 pm »
I want to find out of I'm doing the right thing here with WinMX. I have been playing with the bandwidth throttles after trying the recommended rates from the tester thingy here at WinMX World.

I noticed that with three uploads going at a time, I can adjust the throttle so that they are the same rate and they stay that way. If I get the throttle too high, the upload rates begin to jump around.

Is it optimum to have the throttles set so that your rates are consistent or is that just a preference?

I wonder if the same can be done for the Dload throttles?

Thanks in advance for your replies!

if your upload throttle is below your maximum upload bandwidth (as it should be) then winmx regulates it to get roughly the same rate on each upload, however if your throttles are too high then the rate is limited by your connection rather than winmx, and the flow control limiting it there has no regard for keeping each upload consistent

Hmmm, I have watched it over the past week or so, and it seems that the upload rates rarely stay consistent. Unless I play with the throttles... then they seems to balance quickly. Should I lower the throttles until they consistently run the same, or is it all the same?

the throttle should be set to about 75-80% of your avaliable upload bandwidth for optimum performance

Okay, just one more question on this topic and I'll leave it alone...

it seems that 48000 is the key number for my setup... it keeps my uploads nice and consistent... BUT, the total upload isn't any more that 39 or 40000... all is well?

Thanks again for your response!

Oh, and one more thing...

When I click on the info bar on top of WinMX (to get here), it defaults to IE... is there a way that I can make it use Firefox?

Thanks AGAIN...lol

are you using a primary connection? as that uses a bit of upload bandwidth for the connection/relaying data around the network - generally around 8-9k/s worth

and no, that thing at the top is actually an IE window sitting inside winmx, so unfortunately IE will open a new IE window, minor issue - just open firefox and come here with that if you prefer it :-)

Yep, I'm a primary. It looks like the outgoing throttle is nice and steady...

How about that incoming throttle? I currently don't have it checked and I'm wondering if I should.

Thanks!

that's just to throttle downloads, generally you don't want that enabled (only time you would is if something was downloading too quickly and you had some reason to want to slow it down - like it lagging a game or something, generally speaking you don't need to touch it)
