Some but not all UL time out
« on: January 14, 2006, 10:13:12 pm »
I am running the latest patch of 3.54.  I have also been using peer guardian.

I have run into instances where a few users cannot upload. We can browse each other and get qued, but when I start the UL it starst for a few seconds, and then disconnects.  (Or won't start at all).  In some cases, the same user ul fine a few days ago.

Both users are on primary, although we have also tried secondary with the same results.

2 questions,

-1   any ideas on this.
-2   do I need to run Peer Guardian with the patch?

HI jsmit86,

Well this problem is usually one of two users being on secondary with no ports set right.  If you primaries are working correctly then I dont see what would cause this exactly.

Maybe some of the other folks would have some ideas for ya on that.

As for the other question, if your using the 2.0 patch from the www.winmxgroup.com/   then no, you dont need to use Peerguardian with it.

Is it a true statment that if I do get 3-5 Uploads, and most of my DL are ok, that my ports and firewalls are configured correctly?

The problem seems to be with certain users, while others are OK.

Also - should PeerGuardian be showing allowed connections?
When I check history, I am seeing lots of blocks, but no allowed connections.  (I am actually getting some UL and DL despite this)

The performance seems to not be any different with or without PG.

I probably should not worry about this so much, but I was in the process of a large DL, and I started the same users UL.  After a while it disconnected.  I did not kill it.  The user got pissed and Ignored me!    (In German no less!)  I really am trying to share, but things seem inconsistent.  Is there any explanation for this.

Regarding Peer Guardian, I changed my TCP to 26699, and I now see both UDP and TCP allowed in Peer Guardian.

I am also seeing ICMP from 127.0.0.1 to 127.177.32.66. Is this a problem?

Yes, I would say that is a true statement.

Peerguardian will show allowed connections, the option is in the settings screen, however I dont recommend it.  WinMx has thousands of udp and tcp allowed connections and it will make your screen full of them.  Its just not really needed to log those.  If you want to just turn it on to make sure there are connections then disable it thats fine tho.

You may also need to make sure its not your ISP doing this, by throttling, capping, or filtering your bandwidth too.  Many Cable companies are doing this.

Who is your ISP?

My ISP is Cox Cable.  I just had swirched from 6699 to 16699 about 2 weeks ago.  Now with the switch to 26699 is seems much better for UL, although some still time out.

Also - should I worry about the ICMP from 127.0.0.1 ?

No you shouldnt need to worry with the ICMP,

You may find that you have to change ports alot with Cox .. they are unfortunately definatly one of the ISPs that filter, block, and throttle..

This is interesting.  After running for about 12 hours using TCP 26699, I am no longer seeing any allowed TCP connections on PG.   ??

Is it possible that COX is adapting and blocking this quickly?

Can I test to see if the port is still actually open?

I still have about 7 active ULs.

Jsmit,

I would judge my port accessability on my downloads and uploads and not scans, also yes they may adapt but thats like I said more likely to show up on your uploads and download abilty..
I would not even pay attention to PG2 allowed connections, because they are again not a good judge of true activity.

When those stop or freak out again then we worry.. lol
