character sets in search results

does anyone know of a patch or add-on to "translate" non-Western characters in the search results so that they actually mean something? for a lot of my searches, I seem to end up with a large list of file names that simply get mashed into endless strings of @*!&(£)["] so that there is no way of telling what is what...... same goes when I browse users that I guess are using Japanese character sets.... thanks for any suggestions.....

erm, those files aren't english (as you pointed out) so, if you cant read the name of them, then chances are you dont want it because you wont understand the contents of the file either

yeah, fair enough, but at least one file like that I did download turned out to be exactly the video file I was looking for. Total accident of course, but there it was. seems to me that users are renaming files in their own character set (which is fair enough of course), so the files might still be of use/interest.

if you click the + then it'll list all the other source and show their name, but they only come up in the search in the first place if they contain what you are searchign for - like <soem japanese text>Photoshop<more japanese>.zip  for example, in which case you can see its photoshop, but you'd probably want to click the + and if all of the results for that file have the japanese name then have a look for an english one just to be sure, or get all of the ones you find and sort out the bad ones later
