Winmx Group Patch 2.2 Released
« on: January 31, 2006, 02:15:13 am »
In case you missed the announcement a short time ago, there is now an updated patch for release thats is the culmination of user feedback and improvements on previous releases.

https://www.winmxgroup.com/

the patch is available as two options with WinMX or without, most of you will only need the  non winmx release.

This particular patch is the result of KMs hard work in making the patch usable for all operating systems and has taken a little time to perfect, but today we have the result of his labours  :)

Cheers KM, keep up the good work  8)

Winmx Group Patch 2.2 Released
« Reply #1 on: January 31, 2006, 07:17:01 am »
I have always stood behind KMs hard work but I regret to inform you that this new patch did something I am not quite sure how to describe...

Everything has been fine. No problems in a long time, and no new software installed. WinMX working like a dream with the 2.0 release of the patch. I see a little message that says new patch available....

I say 'Hey, might as well stay up to date on it....' So I get it and install it...

Next thing I know My explorer shell is taking a major crap. Cant open folders. Refuses to launch an instance of explorer. says access refused.

So I reboot the machine, thinking it is a strange glitch. Same thing happens. Absolutely no way to open any of my folders or send a command through explorer's shell. So I decide to try another method. The IE on my quicklaunch bar... I open the browser, and then use it to open local files... Works great to view folder contents, but again cannot actually launch anything. Thank god my control panel still worked.... In fact it seemed to not have been affected at all. Desktop is worthless but the start menu still handling events and the control panel items (.cpl files) function.

So, I use the uninstaller to remove the patch and then reboot again. Still something wrong.... used task manager to launch a new instance of explorer and finally had some access to the desktop items...Got a big smile when I saw the installer for the 2.0 version of the patch still on my desktop, so I used the explorer address bar to type in the path and name of the exe to get it started...

After reinstalling the old patch, everything cleared up. Have no idea why this happened, but if anyone else starts having similar issues, it would be a good thing to figure out. For now I will stick with the 2.0 patch as it seems to work great. (I still stand by KMs work :P )

Sorry to add a bad review, but something went REALLY wrong :(

Best Regards, and Be Good!

does installing 2.2 again cause it to happen again? (if you dare try it, lol)

most of the time if you can reproduce the error then it should in theory be something easy to fix :-)

at the bottom of the winmxgroup home page...

"Or use this to patch any third party applications." - it's just the 3.54 version of the patch :-)

Thanks KM, I should have looked more. Is this patch only for WinMx 3.54 beta? I have 3.53 and should I bother with a beta that's 2 years old? I didn't think the riaa mother fudgers would touch WinMx and we'd have an updated version a long time ago. Now we have an ailing program on life support and few users. I"m still using it but how long can it last? Frontcode is gone. There are new programs out there where I'm sure alot of people went to. Where's WinMx going?

Ailing ?  :o

Not seeing that myself, plenty of folks out there and plenty of files.

I often hear talk on other forums about new more improved programs etc but none of them seem to have a name (except for a few spyware laden nasties )

Thanks again Km, your other patches asked if I wanted to remove the host file, now the 2.2 dll removed it without asking me. I decide what stays and goes on my computer! Now I understand the fighting.

Pie 2.9 patch: 127.0.0.1   localhost

# From here down, all lines with .winmx.com, were added by the MXpie patch v2.9

Revised Pie 2.9 patch with KM's patch: 127.0.0.1   localhost
# this program to stop functioning.
I downloaded the pie patch again and needless to say, yours is disabled.

i minor side effect of required hosts file modifications, but considering when using the winmxgroup patch any hosts files to try and redirect winmx.com are effectively useless it has no effect on anything

the only people even commenting on the hosts file modifications are those that themselves released things to automatically delete other files, so...

those who actually care and know what a hosts file is are not effected by it as they can just set their hosts file to read only if they want to, and the rest of them don't care about anything except having a stable reliable fix such as the winmxgroup patch

Obviously not

This was discussed on the forum a few days ago as a measure to ensure older windows users could stay abreast of any new patch releases.

What I do find strange however is the situation of a pie patch user installing a winmxgroup connection file and complaining it did as it was supposed to.

What ever happened to common sense.

I'm not a programmer and don't care which patch works as long as it does. I"d like the option to have both. I don't want to get into the politics, I just want WinMx to be strong again. I didn't see that discussion and I"m not an older windows user, I look ten years younger.   I don't like the term pie user, I'm a WinMx user. <Waiting for a GhostShip comment.  :)

Bottom line, both wont co-exist.

So long as you get connected, and block the flooders, does it really matter? You get the choice of which patch you wish to use, since both will remove the other, u can switch as you wish anyway.

Thank you Nobby, as you point out, both work in different ways and there is no need to have both installed as its possible to have a potential mishap.

I knew there'd be a GhostShip comment.  :)  That's my point, I want the
choice of which patch I use. I don't use them together and the few times I did, they didn't remove each other. When I disabled the dll WinMx still started with it and got me a bit miffed. I don't find that discussion on the forum but I did see about the host file redirecting WinMx.com. I don't like that and I'll be changing it as seen here. Peace

You did ask for a reply so one was given.

I respect your right to choose what patch you wish but they will remove each other and you should not be suprised by that as they will not live in harmony.
My concern is what damage you may do by repeated swapping of the patches and to what end ?

I was under the impression they both worked.

I wanted to know if the 2.2 patch is only for WinMx 3.54 beta and if it's a good idea to update the program.  Where is that discussion about older windows users? At the beginning, both sides said their patch wouldn't undo the other. Since when do they now? Again, I don't use both and keep switching, I'd just like to have them. As for WinMx users, there are much less as seen through results.

the thing they are complaining about is the part that makes the 3.53 version exactly the same as the 3.54 version, so no it's not just for 3.54 :-)

as for updating... it is recommended that you use 3.54 if you can as it has some bug fixes in it, however the only major flaw in 3.53 is patched by the 3.53 version of the patch anyway so it doesn't make that much of a difference

V 3.54 has some significant privacy enhancements over v3.53 and earlier.

v 3.54 no longer provides full path information to others.  Some file paths can expose the user's real name like \user\Heather\My Music etc.

Also, the new share library function, with file level permissions  allows sharing some files while keeping others of the same type in the same folder private.  It is generally a BAD idea to share one's "Incoming" folder.  Not just that it is full of incompletes, but this allows others to snoop and see just what folder's one is trying to download.

V 3.54 file share permissions allows one to add the "Incoming" folder to shares, then to disable sharing all types of files from it.  Then if desired, a user can select a single file and grant share permission to that one file.  This can be useful when one is getting a special rare video and wants to share it with others in the room who want it too, bittorrent fashion.. UPloading it while downloading it.  V 3.54 has the power to make such exceptions..  With v 3.53 and earlier, one would have to enable sharing all files in the "incoming" folder to help this way - not a good idea as explained above.
