disconnected by my isp after 30 minutes or so
« on: March 01, 2006, 11:46:22 pm »
when i first run winmx a few years ago everything was fine and i could stay up- and downloading for about 24 hours until my isp would disconnect.
for about a year it's like the disconnexion will happen after a few minutes up- and downloading. the whole system freezes and i have to start it all over again.

this is very disatisfying because you likely have switched hosts and need to look for the files for ages then and have to explain to other users why they cannot download from you at once.

anyone an idea how to stop things from going like that?
thanks in advance...

Its not really possible to keep a constant connection with dial up. I suggest looking into getting cable or dsl if you can afford it. try dslreports.com and ask int he forums for a cable or dsl isp near you.

i'm using win98se with winmx v3.53. it's a dsl line 1000kb/s (with a so-called "flatrate" in germany which should guarantee unlimited up- and downstream) and i use a secondary connection...

Ok Chris,

First thing I would do is check with my ISP to make sure all is operational there and that there is not a problem with the modem, like a timer or shutdown of the pc for power saving for instance.

Then I would visit this link to test my Bandwidth and set the correct limits:
https://www.winmxworld.com/scripts/bandwidth/

There is a known issue with 3.53 that causes disconnections when your asking for searches or room listings, however the 2.2 patch has built in protection against this.  Make sure your using the latest patch from here:
www.winmxgroup.com
Btw - This known issue does not cause your entire machine to loose connectivity usually.

Now make sure that all of your in completes are real.  Clear them and replace them one at a time to find sources.  A fake file finding hundreds of sources can cause you to loose lots of connectivity.  If you find one that is doing this remove it.

Also to make sure your not searching for fakes and causing the primary your on to loose connection search with these filters you find here:
https://www.winmxworld.com/tutorials/filtering_fakes.html

Try these things and get back to us...

hi there, thanks for your replies...

i've checked a few things but didn't come to a result. to ask at the isp seems a bit difficult because how to explain that you're using a file sharing device which is "barely legal" here? anyway, i've been asking them if there are any up- or downstream limitations. i'm just awaiting the reply.
the bandwidth throttle is set - as recommended - to 15000. the latest patch is installed. don't think that i became a victim of any fakes.

@nylly444

my isp is t-online, biggest provider to germany.

just saw the reply from the isp: there are no limits on up- and downstream with the chosen tariff...

It may be worth having a look at your incomplete files, just to check that there aren't any finding a large number of sources when this happens.. if there are, deleting those incompletes may cure it.

Nope, with T-online you're safe, that's why I was asking . ;-)
They're definitely NOT throttling ports, shaping traffic or whatever. I used to get some sudden disconnects and winmx crashesmyself , but was able to resolve that as bughunter suggested here.
I guess it can't hurt to try and put your dns server in winmx and see if it helps...

Uebrigens, es gibt zwar mehr englischsprachige Experten, aber wenn's Dir zu kompliziert wird komm einfach rueber in's deutsche Forum hier auf WinMxWorld ;-)

hi...

don't know if i got it right but the proposed solution affects a beta version of winmx with using mswin 2000 and xp. i do use neither the first nor the latter so this can't be the cure. besides, i don't know how to change dns settings in my isp. probably my english is not that good enough to catch the technical details so i'm going to switch to the german forum.

thanks for all the replies by now...

Could it be that you have a virus? Try to Reinstall winmx.
When you connect to a primary, it could be that he is getting flooded with fake files that crash him. When you have connected to secondary, click refresh until you find a stable primary. Use peer guardian. It could be that you yourself are crashing.
I read here that you connect to a set of primaries, when you connect, it is always to one of those on the list. Clicking refresh makes you find some other primaries.
(PLEASE CORRECT ME IF I AM WRONG HERE)
Reconnect to winmx with the blocking patch :)
