What's wrong with my Win-mx?
« on: April 20, 2006, 08:40:22 pm »
HI, I'm a newbie, but I'll try and cut to it the best I can.
I'm running WIN ME with the earlier version on Win-MX (3.53 I believe). I'm also on a home broadband LAN running a Belkin wireless G router.

As everyone knows WINMX went through a transitional period where things didn't connect.
But finally I ran into a PIE patch that got me connected again . A month or so later I came back to find some music and things would never sync up. It would just blink yellow the entire time, I even left it on over night a few times, nothing.

Which brings me up to date now, I recently downloaded the appropriate patch from Winmxgroup.com and loaded it and now when I try to to open WINMX, the app. will show-up in my task bar for all of 2 seconds and disappear. Was it stupid of me to keep the PIE patch installed and load the new update over everything? Please lend a brain to me, I really don't care for the technical stuff as much as I should and want to get back on WINMX soon. Thanks

KM

first uninstall winmx (use the uninstall icon in the start menu), that should completely clear out winmx, then try reinstalling it again from winmxgroup and see if that fixes it

OK,
I've uninstalled WINMX and then tried reinstalling it, only it still does the same thing; a brief flash of the app in my task bar and then nothing... this sucks. Seems like this new patch screwed everything up.

Just a quick thought, did you reboot? if changing from Pie to the dll patch on win ME you'd need to in order to stop it using the hosts file entries & acting like both patches installed at once

when winmx installed, did it select to use the 3.54 version? try running the installer again and selecting 3.53 and see if that version of the patch works... it should have selected the 3.53 version on Windows ME though because the installer knows the 3.54 version doesn't work on it

Well, let's see- I uninstalled WINMX and restarted the machine(many times), then loaded WINMX back on (with the 3.53 version) I've been loading this version the whole time because the installer detects what OS I'm using and pre-selects it for me.

By restarting, I am able to entertain the theory that I will have WINMX back since it takes me through the installation process (I pick a name and my connection etc, etc) only when it finishes loading- nothing... so I double-click on the desktop icon and I'm back to briefly seeing the app come up in my task bar only to disappear again. I'm getting tired of this, I should have left well enough alone- I'd like to hear about someone who is actually able to run this load of WINMX on a 9x based OS. I don't think it's a good one; I should at least be able to get back to watching the connection status light flash yellow at me all day and since I can't, I can only suspect the software. Had the PIE patch continued to get me connected It'd of never gotten to this.

i do run this on a 98SE box... & i have no problems when i do, (well after an extended period it loses connection & has to be restarted), lets be clear, are you using the uninstaller? or deleting the entire winmx folder? (sometimes if there's any stray files in there the uninstaller leaves stuff behind which may interfere..i suggest deleting the entire program folder in this case. Also i would suggest manually replacing your hosts file with the original from here: https://www.winmxworld.com/files/original_hosts_file.zip before beginning (remember to reboot), just in case the issue is there, note that if you have accidentally at any time gotten the xp version of the patch or perhaps bendmx installed in the program folder on ME or 98 it will display this type of behavior, & the uninstaller for winmx won't touch them, so the problem remains if you reinstall.. & if EVERYTHING else fails.. you could always consider the current Pie patch, but please run blocking software (pg2) if you run primary at any time using that solution. in my experience the dll patch works on all versions of windows from and including 95 if you pick the correct install & i've tried all of them...

Alright, I went ahead and ran a search for extra loose files that may still be present on my machine impeding the process and it turns out there were some and another load of WINMX on my second HDD as well. I deleted these and restarted my machine. I even cleared out my recycle bin for good measure.

Well, to be honest I didn't delete the WINMX off my second HDD but everything else went. I always uninstall when possible, strange as it was, I could not uninstall the load of WINMX off my second HDD, so after I deleted extra stuff off C\: I just rerouted everything from the upgrade installation to the full version on my 2nd HDD. I managed to get things back to when it was all just blinking and I'm not going backwards again. If you say there's an newer PIE patch that'll get me connected I'd rather take my chances with that one, cuz I've done everything you asked me to short of deleting all WINMX's on my machine and loading the version that doesn't require a upgrade. I don't think one load of WINMX would have any problems with another load unless they were sharing the same location for one particular component and I made sure this was not the case already. Frankly, I just don't have the faith in this dll way of doing things- and I've got no clue how to manually insert host files into this, so no thanks.

If you could kindly point me to where I can get the latest PIE patch though I'd appreciate it greatly(2.6.2 was the last one I'd heard about); it's a shame loading this fine app has come to have so much intricacies about it. *sigh* No worries about running something extra I always run a secondary connection anyways. I'm sure when I finally get XP on this machine it'll be a breeze to do it.. I've just got to suffer a bit longer.

http://www.mxpie.com/downloads.html.en - latest pie version

(Ugh, I was hoping I'd never have to say that.   :D)

!!!! Also don't forget to run peerguardian with the additional blocklists to keep the RIAA off our network. DO NOT SKIP THIS STEP, it's very important it gets done, many users seem to ignore it, and that's what keeps the flooders on our network.

https://www.winmxworld.com/tutorials/peerguardian.html - guide to install PG2
https://www.winmxworld.com/tutorials/block_the_riaa.html - Adding RIAA blocklists

AGAIN don't skip this step, I hope you get my point and see that it's very important this gets done  :)

Quick note: if you must use Pie,install it BEFORE winmx, or else rerun the setup wizard afterwards, port testing is non functional before it's applied (and the system rebooted on ME) & at the risk of boring you repeating stuff be SURE you install & run Peer Guardian set as outlined HERE: https://www.winmxworld.com/tutorials/block_the_riaa.html

Second note: installing the original hosts file is dead easy on win ME you'd simply extract the file in the zip i gave you the link to, & paste it into your c:\Windows\ folder, overwriting the one that's already there & reboot.
