hi there winmx worked fine until other day . now i turn p.c on and message displays tcp/udp listening ports unable to connect .....? and something about a passive firewall

would i be correct to assume that the message only comes up when you try to use a primary connection?

in that case its because winmx is unable to accept inbound TCP connections or UDP packets, this is likely a firewall issue.

Check your firewall/router to make sure everything is allowed/forwarded, then in winmx go in to settings, then run the setup wizard to re-check it.

hi there again thanks for the advice but no joy with that ...winmx has full access according to my firewall settings ihave Mcafee protecting things and to be honest dont really understand much about computers... I have run the winmx setup wizard as advised and it is unable to make aTCP connection . Itried to run winmx without any firewall and still that annoying yellow flashing light comes up with connecting above it ........ Why ? has this happened all of a sudden as ihave run winmx for some time without any problems ........?????? Regards

you mean it cant connect to the network at all?

go to start > run and type "telnet winmx.com 7950" (without the quotes) and see if it connects and spits out a load of data or if there are problems connecting

greetings done the telnet thing comes up with some odd looking symbols and connection to host lost ......... also when i click on the winmx icon now i have to go thro the set up beta page......... and it tells me something about SOCKS ??????? or its a bad internet connection .... i dont know if im on LAN or what but im on broadband ...... cheers

open up "my computer" and go to program files\winmx, delete all of the files in there except winmx.exe (you might not see the .exe on the end of the filename depending on your settings)

then restart winmx and it should be a clean MX exactly how it was when it was first installed, it should do the setup wizard stuff again then after that see if it works or not.

hi there ..... now ive opened the files as suggested and there are several there as follows colors Dat file 9kb ,libary Dat file 5kb , settings Dat file 2kb , errcatch ,license text document 6 kb , Uninstall winmx uninstaller ( this icon has a big red cross thro it and says something about containing winmx software ????? ) Wpnp channelcmds , Text document 12 kb , Winmx application ..... now do you mean delete all except winmx application or am i looking in the wrong place ....... cheers

hi there... done as you said it went thro the set up and got to same point and told me it could not find a listening port ...... so i retried it and the same thing happened again telling me that a PASSIVE FIREWALL ???????? was up......... regards

i have found out that when i delete the settings dat file 2 kb it disappears only to reappear has this got something to do with the winmx not connecting as the settings cant be changed i.e getting rid of this poxy passive firewall ??????????????

Can you tell me if you have a router or dsl modem that might need to be forwarded.. sounds like something is blocking your ports for WinMX to me...and what firewalls your using also would be helpful...

Okay.. now we can get somewhere i think...

The modem you have has NAT capabilities, in other words it sends information to the computer your using and WinMX is not getting through. What we need to do is set your Voyager up to allow WinMX.

The only trouble I see is the brands didnt match up, however the instructions I found for you should be almost identical.

Go to this site Port Forwarding the BT Voyager 205 ADSL.

On this page you will see instructions with pictures, just follow along as you go through the steps.
IT IS NOT necessary to set up a Static IP so just skip that part of the instructions.

Once you have done this I usually tell folks to reboot the machine and then give it a try. Should get you rolling..

Also, be sure if your XP firewall is enabled that you have set a rule or exception to allow WinMX through...you can see how by going here Configuring Your Firewalls for WinMX

hi i have tried to follow the instructions oo the port forwarding page . i take it when they say browser it means type in http blah blah blah in my goggle thing but this just comes up with matching sites and not the b.t picture displayed....... am i just being thick .. ??????????

Hi Evilc, I think your entering it into the wrong box , the address bar is where you enter the router access number, the google search bar is not the same or right place.

Its the really long white box, at the top of your Internet Explorer page, enter the numbers (something like these I think 192.168.?.? ) and hit the GO at the end of the bar to access the routers setup panel.

Okay,
Heres what I know for sure....

One. You have a modem that does not contain a portforwarding option, so we can rule that out.

Two. If you dont know what a router is chances are you dont have one, they are a box that allows you to connect more then one computer in the house to the net via the same internet connection and would be hooked up like this Internet In to Modem to Router to computer(s).

Three. Your using Macfee for your firewall, are you using Windows XP by chance, there is a built in firewall and with some updates from Microsoft has a habit of enableing itself. To see if its enabled do this

Go to your control panel and look for an icon that says Firewall, if you dont see one go to the icon that says 'Network Connections' double click it, then right click the 'Local Area Network' icon and choose Properties. From there you will see an Advanced tap near the top, click that and it should say 'Protect my computer from outside intrusions', if that box is ticked either untick it or go to here to learn how to allow WinMX through. Windows XP Firewall.
If that is Not ticked then we need to consider other options, is it necesary for you to have a primary connection to WinMX, like for hosting. If not then I suggest this..

Go to Settings in WinMX, choose Internet connections, then Incoming TCP Connections and make sure the option that says 'Unable to receive TCP' is ticked.
Then go to IN/OUT UDP connections and do the same.

Some users will get a message 'Both Users Firewalled' when trying to download from you or visa versa, but it may be the only way it will work for you for now.

The last alternative would be to try to reinstall the WinMX program to a new folder in your program files and see if it helps...

Let me know once you have tried these things how your doing...

hi there .... now i have tried your suggestions with no luck the final option will not install because it cant find a TCP/UDP connection ..... the same old shit..... think you could be on to something about windows updates ...... would a complete restore sort it out or is this a bit drastic??? or are there any other programs similar to winmx i might have more luck with..... thanks for all your help .laters
