MPAA Commisioned Survey Causes P2P Concern
« on: May 04, 2006, 11:37:39 pm »
It seems that the MPAA is worried about supposed revenue loss due to P2P.

Quote
The MPAA commissioned study, conducted by the research group LAX, was more comprehensive in scope than previous studies, primarily because it included for the first time losses due to Internet piracy.
If the statistics are indeed accurate, it paints an entirely grim picture for the movie industry. While losses due to bootlegging (the practice of mass producing counterfeit DVDs/CDs and selling them on the black market for a substantial discount) were predictably estimated at $2.4 billion world wide, losses due to Internet piracy were close behind at $2.3 billion globally. These numbers reflect losses for the year 2005.
The study also calculated losses due to fair use, or as the MPAA likes to put it "illegal copying", at $1.36 billion.

This is of course the same organisation that gave false figures to journalists a few years back and got caught out but you got to hand it to them they are always ready with a new exaggerated report or survey to convince the politicians that they need to enact more potentialy wealth protecting measures.

The last bit of the Slycks article is the best commentary of all, readers are encouraged to go take a peek at it on their site

I don't know about songs, but from software, type, the Average piracy rate ((pirated/total legal sold) *100) is 3 %. I will get a link as soon as possible. It came on a newspaper. Some rates were (Piracy)

Vietnam: 92%
Columbia : 90%
China: ~ 85 % (Can't recollect but definately more than 83)
India: ~~ 82 %

I will get a link on this as soon as possible.

Getting Repetitive... sorry last one.

Thirty-five per cent of the packaged software installed on personal computers worldwide in 2005 was illegal, leading to global loss of $34 billion, an increase of $1.6 billion over the previous year, the study said
