Linux IP Blocking Program
« on: May 16, 2006, 08:13:41 am »
I was scoping over another site and spotted this useful item they mentioned.

http://moblock.berlios.de/

Quote
MoBlock is a linux console application that blocks connections from/to hosts listed in a file in peerguardian format (guarding.p2p). It uses iptables ipqueue userspace library and it is very light in resource usage (cpu, ram).

There is a plan to make MoBlock become the official peerguardian linux client, you can read something about it at the Phoenixlabs forum so feel free to ask for support there.

Its open source folks so thats another plus  :)

I hope one of the Linux users can give it a test and report on it for us, perhaps a screenshot /tutorial on its operation even ?

Cheers to

ummmm.... it's a console program, so no gui, meaning no screenshots :P
It can be run as a background service to block on all ports or be integrated into iptables to block only certain services - like winmx for instance.
The documentation coming with it is all you need to be able to add our block list and update it automatically :)

That sounds positive, simple and effective.  :)

The latest Peerguardian for linux is version 1.5, so quite old.
MoBlock is the "unofficial" peerguardian Linux which can handle IP lists in the same format and handles our block and allow lists just as well.
Both do work, but if I remember correctly MoBlock uses less recources ....and it's still maintained, which PG linux isn't.

The link about a gui for PG and Moblock is news to me, might be quite interesting for those preferring a gui to a console app :-)
