New member with download problems

I have read most of the posts here concerning problems with downloads starting at normal speeds, then slowly dwindling down to 0.00 and timing out.  I am presently experiencing this same nightmare.  Although most of the posts I have read here state that the problem is with Cable Internet Providers, I use Sprint DSL.  Since I am enduring the same incidents regarding downloads (my uploads are running normally), and I am using a DSL connection rather than Cable, should I infer that mine may be an internal problem, rather than an ISP problem?  This only started in the past week or so.  The downloads will start, and I will gather sources, but over the course of a short while, the download speeds spiral down until the source times out and turns red, and all the other sources time out also....when I right click and highlight them all, and select "Retry", they will all come back and fall into place, with the only remaining problem being that I lose my download and have to start sending messages to the source begging for a restart, knowing all along that if the source does start me again, it will be only a matter of a short while before this has to be repeated all over again.
As I am new to this particular forum, let me also say that I wish I had found this place long before now....     BEERS FOR EVERYONE, ON ME !! :lol:

We have 'roomies' ( chat room members ) that are 'traffic shaped' by their providers. And it isn't just cable. One is a USA resident on DSL... although their uploads are also affected by the shaping. The usual sign is exactly what you have posted as the problem. One way to test your connection is to try a bandwidth test site. (not one by your provider)  If it produces a normal result for your DSL speed, but you can't seem to download on WinMX or other p2p software then I would suggest you may be a victim of a 'traffic shaping' ISP.

If your speed test shows some deviation on what you might think is normal for your DSL I would suggest contacting your provider... but don't expect them to admit they are engaged in 'traffic shaping'. lol

If your speed test is normal, and you still have downloading problems post back here. Someone is sure to have some ideas on what to do to get the best out of WinMx.

In doing research on Sprint I came up with this little article printed only last November and is completely relevant.  Also for me quite interesting.

I agree with AussieGirl that your upload behavior suggests that you may have other issues causing your problem, such as misconfigured ports, flooded fake files causing issues, or even your MX client.  So the answer is yes its possible that your ISP is doing this, but we should rule out other possible causes first in your case.

Give us a bit more information when you post back, like
WinMX version, patch your on, do you use primary or secondary for WinMX?
 Have you configured ports in your DSL Modem (If needed)?
Do you have other problems with connections on other networks?
Have you run both online/onpc virus scans, also adaware and spyware type programs to make sure your system is clean? (Many of those nasty bugs can rob you of connection)

Please find above results of speed test....absolutely horrible... ! 
Below are my personal statistics regarding my pc, if that will help at all:

I  have run all antivirus, adware and spyware numerous times in safe mode after installing latest updates....
I am using WinMx v3.53, installed with the latest patch from www.winmxgroup.com.
As far as ports and stuff, I am presently on a wireless DSL connection, using a sprint router, but I know absolutely nothing about port-forwarding, so I have done nothing to the router...I also use Filetopia as another p2p, and it seems to work just fine for uploads, but the downloads are affected there also, so I suspect it may be a problem which originates with my ISP.

Sorry, I forgot to mention that, using this DSL connection through a wireless network with other computers at work, I have no choice but to use the Secondary Connection on WinMx...when I installed, the connection wizard advised me that I could not make a primary connection.  I am in a rather unique position, however, due to the fact that I live in a Company-provided residence that also serves as an office for other employees, so I am connected to a network consisting of 2 other desktop pc's, and one laptop pc; but, I never try to make a connection to winmx during work hours, so mine is the only pc online when I am attempting to use mx.

Hmm.. OK..

I take it then that its ok for you to use this connection for your personal stuff after hours and wonder if your boss/bosses/partners etc.. would allow you to access the router to preform a simple forwarding procedure.


Also I would advise you install the latest version of WinMX which is WinMx 3.54 Beta 4 (dont let the word beta fool ya, if frontcode had stayed in the game this would be a near match to the next official 4.0 release and is very stable, more so then 3.53.) It has a few bug fixes in it that help about disconnects and may help you also with this problem.
Get it by going to www.winmxgroup.com/ and download the patch that has WinMx bundled with it.
Rename your existing C:\Program Files\WinMX folder to WinMX1.
Install the new version for XP users.
You can harvest your Settings.dat file to get back any settings you saved in your previous version by copying them to the new folder.  Then restart MX.  If all is loaded fine delete the old folder.
This way we know you have the most current version and current patch both.

About your speed tests, it would seem that your not getting what your paying for there and calling the ISP may help you out.  I dont like to assume but you did carry this test out with everything off on the machine as far as programs running and p2p apps closed?

I was told that I am NOT TO MESS with the router (lol) by my bosses, who really dont seem concerned that they may be paying for internet access and getting only a fraction of what they are paying for.   The newer version of the patch and winmx are now installed, with little change in the original malfunction.

And finally, the tests were run with nothing running in the background...  I also did speed tests on the other desktop computers which run through the dsl router -- with pretty much the same ghastly results:  pc1) download speed: 266kbps or 33.3 KB/sec [89.1% worse than average user]   upload speed: 133 kbps or 16.6 KB/sec  [80.8% worse than the average user]     pc2) download speed: 155 kbps or 19.4 KB/sec  [93.6% worse than the average user]    upload speed: 132 kbps or 16.5 KB/sec [81% worse than average user]      These tests were run on each of the other pc's while none of the other computers on the router were turned on, and nothing was running in the background.

I am not sure what else to try that is non evasive and would be easy in this circumstance..

Anyone else any ideas?

I am new, have read the posts in this thread, and too am having the same problem - (download started at great speed but has dwindled to near nothing).  I have the following:

Computer:

Dell Desktop
Windows XP Pro (sevice pack 2)
Intel Pent. 4
CPU 2.66 GHz, 1.00GB ram

WinMX

version: v3.54 beta 4
patch 2.2

Modem:  Cable

read about testing the bandwidth, here are the results:

Communications 3.1 megabits per second
Storage 373.6 kilobytes per second
1MB file download 2.7 seconds
Subjective rating - Awesome

My download started at 3.9 mb /sec and now ar 1.8 bytes / sec .

Did I miss any other diagnostic info?

We have been seeing an increase lately in ComCast customers that have this problem.

As long as you have followed the above advise for your set up, as it sounds like you have the latest versions and patches.

I would suggest this sounds like they are filtering your WinMx.

Do your downloads also loose speed this way?

There are some ports that seem to be working for some

1720 TCP
3339 UDP or TCP
39 UDP
Had one person use port 1 on both and worked.. dont ask me how ..

Here is a list of ports you can try to get around it, but admittedly the best way around this is to move to DSL ..

Well, most of this is greek to me - ports and how to configure them... I don't know.  Also, moving to DSL will help me how?

BTW:  I have started another download since my first post.  It is downloading at about 10,000 bytes while the first is still at 1.8 bytes...  Is that unusual?

Yes Billy that can be natural.. You have to keep in mind that you can only download from someone as fast as they are able to upload to you.  Meaning you will see different speeds from different users on your downloads.  Uploads should be fairly the same tho. 

Just keep an eye on things for a few days. usually if your ISP is filtering your bandwidth then downloads and uploads are affected, they start fast and drop to 0 and then time out.  If you just see this now and then its prolly not a big deal.  If its constant then your ISP is filtering. 

If you are seeing it constantly let me know and I will walk you through the port configurations.

The reason I suggested the DSL is because most of them are not using software to rip off their customers as Cable is.  You can read about what we are talking about more here:

This is the same premise as we are seeing with Shaw, Cox, CommCast, and a few other Cable Companies.

Again just let me know if its a recurring problem..
