DRM is the annoying technology imposed by the movie and music industry that is quickly becoming a hot topic for consumers.

The grass roots group DefectiveByDesign.org has caused controversy within the on-line Community with their high profile events that have seen Hazmat suit wearing protesters targeting high-tech companies for distributing defective products containing DRM.

I hope enough of a stink is caused that drm is eventually outweighed and things get back to normal. I know that is really wishing, but we all remember a time when that was not the norm, and companies made products that were worth buying and had no worry about copying.

I guess when we live in an age where products are crap, there is no room for letting someone see what it is before buying it. Their fear is if we know ahead of time they have a sh*tty product, then we won't buy it. So they keep us from copying and sharing things because they want our money more than they want a happy customer. And if you are caught seeing if their product is worth buying then you get jailed and they can sue you for even more money.

The thing I don't get is how in the world is it legal to have a backup of your purchased media, but it is illegal to break the copy protection to make that backup? Doesn't sound like fair use to me.

Following that principle, then is it now illegal to pick a lock that you purchased? And are locksmiths a service of Satan?

The world has gone mad. Or at least the corporate world has.

Consumer regulators in Europe say the company places too many restrictions on consumers who buy songs from the online iTunes store, regulators in Norway and Britain are renewing calls for Apple to revise the rules that consumers agree to when they begin using the iTunes store  -- and the consternation is spreading west.
