LET'S NOT BE STINGY
« on: June 23, 2006, 11:20:52 pm »
Fellow WinMX users,  I too have been using WinMX since the days when it had millions of users. I was really happy that they got it back up, and that there was such a community of devoted users that worked so hard to create the patches and keep it going, my hat is off to you all !! :D    In reading about everything that was done to keep it going, I noticed that a recurring theme was that if we all work together, we can keep it up, even though the users now number considerably less, and to pass the word around, etc.

Recently I upgraded to v3.54 beta 4, since I read that there would be less of the problems that had occurred, such as fake files and so on. But since I've been on the new version, I have been unable to download but just a very few songs. This is not because of any problems with the program or my computer, or not even because there are less results than there used to be. No, the problem now is that everytime I make a connection, some asshole disconnects me.  :x     I am NOT a leech, I have hundreds of files all open and available, and following the etiquette that USED to be practised by WinMX users, I would NEVER disconnect someone in the middle of their download !!   Nor do I have a slow connection, but lately nine times out of ten if I make a connection it is disconnected by the user, even if it's going fast and is almost done. I'm not talking about particular users or time of day, IT HAPPENS ALL THE TIME NOW !

So the message I think we should be passing around is that if you like using WinMX and want to keep it going, want to attract more users (more available files like in the days when you could find ANYTHING you were looking for), and be one big happy family again,
then you shouldn't be acting like jerks and closing your files and cutting off people when they connect to you. How ridiculous is it that YOU'RE using the service, but you don't wamt anyone else to. That isn't how file SHARING works, and it's not GOING to work if you all don't CUT THAT SHIT OUT !!       THAT"S what should be posted on the home page, and by all the moderators here and in the chat rooms !!  People will simply quit supporting the network if that kind of behavior becomes the norm. I saw how helpful everyone was when asked to connect primary (which I do) instead of secondary, because there weren't enough primary USERS for the secondary network. Well, you also need to realize that good netiquette is also necessary to draw and keep USERS, which is what the network depends on, it should be as obvious for the one issue as it is for the other. So be as helpful about this and everyone practice cooperation and maybe it will catch on. Please.

Hi Sabra, yes I think your right in some respect in that some users are leeching but I think those people find that after a while the rare stuff they seek is denied them.
I cannot think of any reason to disconnect a running download its not something I have been seeing anyway, anyone been seeing the same pattern  ?

I think its only fair to ask folks to share something as that is what the network is about, not all of the traffic on the wpn is copyight material and I,m sure a ride around the web will find most folks something to share that others want, but I dont think its right to demand either, using winmx is a purely voluntary things we all agree, its more than just filesharing and some folks have valid reasons not to share, we must also remember the new users who would be better helped by pointing to a tutorial on sharing rather than receive a PM of abuse, anyway thats my 3 cents worth, what do the rest of you think ?

BTW are you aware your ISP is one of those allowing macrovision to flood the network with fakes ?

I think there are several things that could be cause of this issue..

the least of which percentage wise are traders being greedy but yes I believe this happens.  This site if you read around you will find we don't encourage this at all.. trading fairly is as close as we get to supporting trading activity and frankly I don't really care for that unless you have both free share slots then use a program like MXMoni to trade with a few slots.

The next big issue for folks are friggin greedy ISPs mostly american and canadian Cable companies that get a kick out of lying and abusing customers.  They use throttle software that in many cases rather then set them at a steady low speed to get dl and upload at, start of like rocket boosters then dwindle till they die off and time out.  I cant tell you how many good folks paying a lot of money I might add have this issue and are stuck because there is not other options in the area they live.  Many thankfully have realized this scam of over selling bandwidth for certain areas and moved to a more reputable DSL company.  You can also find more information about this mostly in the Uploads/Downloads section of the site.

The third cause I can think of off hand for such things to happen is folks that just aren't sure how to set MX up properly.  One of my favorite things about it, is how versatile it is for different connections and usage.  This is hard for some new users to grasp.  Set up is very important and some folks don't realize there is help like this site to get your connection and MX working and they just try to muttle their way through..

The fix for all three is education if ya ask me.. we try here but not all yall know where to find the best mx help available..
So that is my thoughts on this issue.. a kind pm and offer of someplace to help ya is what I usually to..

Do most of these transfers start & stop pretty much instantly?
If so, did you obtain your patch from www.winmxgroup.com and when?
Unless you did & have version 3.0 it occurs to me that lots of these transfers that cancel may be the very fakes GhostShip referred to above, I would advise double checking you have the latest 3.0 patch from there & if not changing onto it, as that will remove false results from your searches.

I whole-heartedly agree Sabra.  I have also noticed a sharp decline in the number of genuine sharers on WinMX.

There are a massive number of leechers with the 0 upload hack.  I've seen numerous posts on Vladd's forum of users requesting links to the 0 upload hack.  I couldn't believe that posters were replying with links and config recommendations.  Promoting this type of selfishness will eventually kill off WinMX in the not too distant future.  Soon, all that will be left on WinMX will be the 0 hack users sitting around with blank upload/download screens.

I was also a target on ignore lists because I'm a 56K user (not by choice, but it's the only option in my area).  I was trading with 1 user for about 3 minutes, when I received a pm stating "OMG you really are on 56K.  This will never work, bye"

It has become a chore just to get a basic mp3 download.  FYI I shared 53 movies, 18 ps2 games and 114 music vids/concerts.  I downloaded from the open room without ever going into chat rooms (which seem almost mandatory now).

I left WinMX last week for greener pastures.

Jules I'm sorry you felt you had to leave WinMX, not all of us mind 56K users in our transfers, I was once one myself, some of us understand not having a choice, personally I think if a 56K user has the patience to dl a huge file, good luck to them, & I urge traders & sharers who see them downloading to open an extra slot rather than cancel such people..
Honestly someone uploading from you over dialup doesn't rob you of much bandwith for others!

I agree with Bearded, I was also once 56k with no choice.  When I notice any slower users transfering in my files I simply start the next person in que along with them.. this makes it so everyone cant get a little..

God I remember when i used a 56 k modem and still I never gave up . I personally love ppl with 56 k modem speeds at times as i dont have to worry as much about my bandwidth peeking  as i use alot for rooms and bots etc while im downlaoding in torrent . my advise is never give up as there are many wnderful ppl out there that love to help those even with a 56k speed including myself. i often love putting a person with a 56k speed downloading when i go to bed and taht gives them hours and hours to download. and should yah get disconnected im always willin to reconnect. personally myself i prefer those downloading to stay in my room but thats only my choice.

anyways NEVER give up winmx as I was even there before!

hey Me Here I'm catching up in posts  heheehehe

I was once a leecher on 56k... but now I share like anything. All my rules have exceptions for 56k keeping in mind that i was one myself.
The trouble with 56k is that, for those users uploading robs you significantly of your download bandwidth. So I don't really expect them to upload much. Undoubtedly, there are many exceptions, but none the less...
But I don't know what there is to complain about... All you have to do is to open another slot as said. Everyone is happy then.
Reconnect to winmx with the blocking patch :)

I have noticed that WinMx users are by and large pretty generous about their files with one big exception.  If you are downloading one type of file and have little to no files of the type you are downloading, then you well may get disconnected no matter how many files you are sharing.

My personal feeling is there are too many selfish "traders" on WinMX who use it solely to swap files of the same type 1 for 1, personally I say by all means use MxMonitor or similar to ensure some sort of share, & trade if you like when you're at your PC, but the rest of the time, just let it run, anyone joining my queue gets a fair shake, they'll reach the top eventually & get their download, even on those rare occasions I explicitly trade, I make sure that some ordinary "sharing" activity continues, If others hadn't been similarly generous, most of my share wouldn't be there lol
