I have found files that were not properly named, including the extensions. For example, I have found avis that were mpegs in reality. The correction solution is simply to rename the file extension.

In the old WinMX, this was easy. In the new version, I cannot find a way to access a "rename" of the file extension.

Also, I collect and share art work which is largely all jpg files. However, in checking my lists, my eye finds it easier to read "jpg" as opposed to "JPG." The cascading file lists with alternating upper and lower case extensions is simply disjointing in speed work. The ability to simply change the extention case is an aid in sorting and filing.

So, how do I rename the file extension under the new WinMX? Your help is appreciated.

Personally I use Windows Explorer for the task, you do have to make sure "hide extensions for known file types" is unchecked in your view settings, & windows will issue a warning when you change an extension, otherwise it works fine.

how did you find out the file extension < you use gstop to check the extenion>
as avi divx is a standard mpg1
so have to be carefull in renameing files
allso winmx does pick up the file extension as deflaut files thats allso why asking

Ace: I can't speak for our original enquirer, however, I find generally when Media Player puts up that annoying "the file extension does not match the content.... " dialogue, it's time to do some checking & change it to one that does...

Or alternatively, my default image viewer bitches about files with .jpeg extensions & opens them if you change to .jpg & I wholeheartedly agree with his preference for the case to match.

i think filenames should be completely lower case, with the exception of names that are descriptive (ie a TV show name, episode number, episode name etc) in which case it should be the proper case, with a lower case extension

btw open a command prompt, go to the directory you want then

ren *.jpeg *.jpg
ren *.jpg *.jpg

will rename the jpeg to jpg and make them all lower case
