When I tried to load WinMX this afternoon, I saw there's a message shown in the ads bar:
"Click for urgent update", and it gave me this link:
"http://www.mxpie.com"

I have no idea what to do next. I don't know what's actually happening.

It's a notification that the patch you are using is outdated, following that link would get you an update to another patch that would also become outdated, you'd be better off getting This Patch (click here) closing winmx & running it, as it has significant advantages
1) It keeps up when cache IP addresses change without needing updates
2) It prevents RIAA/Macrovision from using your connection to flood fake results
3) It prevents you getting fake search results.

I am using Win98 and WinMX 3.31. Is this patch ok for my system?

hi kwfine ,as far as i'm aware the patch will work on all operating systems win 98 and later and winmx versions 3.31 and over but make sure winmx is closed b4 installing the patch

Enjoy the fake results is all I can say, the host file type of solution will require constant updates as Peer cache IP,s change, the winmxgroup patch has no such limitations.
most of the informed users are using the superior patch but its your choice.

I have edited your links to reflect the site location rather than directly linking to an EXE file that could contain a virus.

The "patch"you choose to connect with is of course entirely up to you however as you are going to use the pie hostfile fix i would strongly recommend (if you arn't already) that you to use peerguardian2 with winmxworlds blocklist added to it expecially if you are or are considering making a primary connection to winmx.
Also as stated above the pie pach will do nothing to filter the fake files that are currently plaguing the network where as the patch offered here will filter them
