DEP shutting down explorer
« on: July 05, 2006, 03:18:18 pm »
Compaq Presario Desktop PC
Windows XP, sp2
AMD Sempron 3100+
NVIDIA GeForce FX 5600
512 MB RAM
Usable Hard Disk Capacity: 160 GB
Security: AntiVir, SpyBot S&D, AdAware, Ewido

It seems that in the past few days, for some reason, after i start a movie download, when i open my Temp Downloads folder, where all the incompletes stay til they are completed, and moved to my shared folder, I get an error window saying that Data Execution Program is shutting down my windows explorer...  i cant get the folder to stay open, and it shuts down my explorer...  i have gotten a lot of ''free advice'' from people who are telling me that it is a sign that i should run away from mx, and never go back due to stuff it is doing to my computer...the logic they give is that just by installing the patch, I should see that I am having to hack my own computer just to use winMx...  I have been an mx user for a couple of years, and I really dont want to leave, but i need some answers as to why this problem is occuring with my pc...   the DEP window only shows up when i open the Temp folder, and it doesnt matter if the movie file/files inside are complete or incompletes, it still shuts my internet explorer down...   any assistance?

Hi Badatti2d,

Well yes your 'free advice' you got wasnt the greatest this problem has nothing to do with WinMX but your XP sp2 DEP.  Heres a bit of more Free Advice...lol.

Set your Windows explorer.exe as exempt by doing the following:

1. Click Start
2. Select Control Panel
3. Select System
4. Click the Advanced tab
5. In the Performance region select Settings
6. Click the Data Execute tab in the dialog box that opens
7. Select Turn on DEP for all programs and services except for those I select
8. Place a Tick beside the Windows Explorer as shown below
9. Click Apply and then OK.
10. It is recommended that you Reboot your machine.

If you continue to have problems there are also some issues XP has with Video files that we can look at as well.. please let me know how this works for you...

I thank you for the help, and I have done as the instructions said....as for the free advice from the mx nay-sayers, I take it for what it's worth, and fall back on the old addage:  ''you get what  you pay for''   lol    I fully expect the problem will be taken care of after following through with the instructions above, and I truly thank you again for the help.  I have no intentions of leaving winMx as long as this forum is here and accessible to help with problems or difficulties I may have in the future.  Thanks again
