WinMX System Tray Icon Problem
« on: July 08, 2006, 03:01:54 am »
Ok, so, if explorer.exe crashes/restarts when winmx is open. The system tray icon disapears, but if you hit ctrl + shift + esc. You can see that winmx.exe is still running. For some reason, winmx never makes it back to the system tray. The only way I have found to open it again is to double click the shortcut on the desktop. The new patch makes the loading screen appear everytime. You can also end winmx.exe and the icon will show up again when you re-open it; however, it's annoying to have to restart downloads/get queued again and go back to the chatrooms.

The best way I know to simulate this is to:

1) Have WinMX running.
2) Go to http://kuvazokad.free.fr/zipit.htm
3) Hit Ctrl + Shift + Esc and end explorer.exe and firefox.exe / iexplore.exe
4) Click File>Run[b/] explorer.exe in the Task Manager.
5) Check for the icon next to the clock.

when explorer crashes it loses ALL tray icons, it's nothing related to winmx, it just loses the lot... some programs periodically refresh the icon (for example to animate it) so those ones when they go to refresh it it gets put back, but winmx doesn't - most programs don't actually, as it messes up other things, like the XP auto hide inactive icons thingy (that's the technical name for it)

the good news is that there is a way to make it refresh the icon so i would reappear after a explorer crash, the bad news is that it is to right click the tray icon... lol

although i think if you have a regular problem of explorer crashing enough for you to be annoyed by losing your tray icons, then you should seriously consider sorting out that is causing it to crash :?

I ended up downloading this program called PS Task Factory. It hides all the icons in one icon and stops the explorer.exe problem.

I'm not sure what the problem is. I've had problems with double clicking IE and then a few minutes later 3 or 4 of them open. Firefox + Quicktime is also a problem. It crashes when there is embedded music so I can't have quicktime. Firefox also crashes a lot, but that's probably because of buggy code on the websites.

So did you click the link?  :D

why do you think i edited your post and disabled the link?

btw it's not too much of an issue in firefox so i didn't have much of an issue... but ending explorer.exe when you go to a site to make your browser crash shouldn't be required - if you had to kill explorer because IE crashed then something is wrong
