I'm a win98 user

I get a message "Failure to Initialize winsock program terminating"?

Can you tell me which patch you have installed?
And if you dont mind also which version of WinMX your using ?

I just downloaded and installed the latest one on winmx group site...

try removing winmx completely (make sure that c:\program files\winmx is deleted) and reinstall it, make sure that you didn't somehow end up with an old one - the old pre-3.0 patches the 3.54 version would use a patch that didn't work on 98 and would come up with that error, 3.0 that issue is solved nw though

Try that removing the folder and reinstall for us.. just to be sure ..

The other things is do you see a ws2_32.dll in your folder for c:\Program Files\WinMX if you do, then you either have the old patch or you have BendMX installed and BendMX wont work with that file and your 3.54 version of WinMX.

You should however see a file called OLEDLG.DLL << the latest 3.0 patch file

but I still have the same problem.

no, there aren't any other .dll files in the WinMX folder.

interesting, try renaming oledlg.dll to something else to disable it and see if it still comes up with the error - although it shouldn't be caused by that patch :-S

You aren't trying to run with BendMX or other add ons installed are you? That's the only time I've seen that error with WinMX running under Win 98.

Also please check the properties of the shortcut you're using to start WinMX, use the "Find Target" button, it's not impossible to end up with 2 winmxprogram folders, please make sure you have the right one patched (ideally delete any spare ones too & start with a fresh clean install).

that is the only copy of winMX I have on my computer..

hmm, interesting... first time i've heard of that one, renaming it does mean it's something patch related (btw it won't connect, because you just disabled the patch... lol)

try installing winmx 3.53 (instead of 3.54) and putting this file in to the winmx directory, it's an alternate version of the patch but only works on 3.53

failing that the next thing to try would be 2.2, but that doesn't have the fake filtering...

Just a thought and I might be completely off track with this but could it be this user is using the same or similar program (PGP I think it was) that someone mentioned in the help room the other day. Apparently it locks down winsock and won't allow a replacement dll to take over.
