To share or NOT to share
« on: August 04, 2006, 05:38:16 pm »
I get pretty ticked off by WinMx users who download my files but have no files to share themselves .. how  can I permanently block these individuals from accessing my files?? I have tried using the "IGNORE" feature but it doesn't appear to work.

Hi Bill Gates..

*giggles a bit at that nick*.. cute

Ok the best way to keep them from your files is to use an upload manager.  These can auto check the files of those that attempt to enter your que and add the ones that share no files or lower then the number you specify to your ignore button automatically.  I will ask you to keep in mind a few minor points..

There are plenty of folks out there right now scared or unaware how safe sharing files on WinMX is or can be.. and so keep you limits fair for new folks also.. for example I have my limit set to 1, others i know use the 2, 5 or even only 10 files.  Its good for beginners to get them here and its better to teach them the right way to share then to just assume they are all the same as the very few ppl that refuse to share..

Ok rant over..heres the links to the two programs.. most folks I think use the MXMonitor one.. but both do work with MX.  Give them a try and let me know how you like them.

Have installed Mxmoni .. see how it goes .. will keep you posted ..

To those responsible, Thnx for raising it from the dead .. xx

What a wonderful program!!.. I share many files. It's very and realy important for me. For me, it's about values, "principe" and logic... cause, I download files?... So... I NEED to share too.

But with this fabulous program, I can ban the people who DON'T SHARE ANYTHINGS because I don't like "les profiteurs" (do know what the term in english...)

So... thank you Me Here for this program! :-)   ... and sorry for my english ; I'm a francophone...

"Will not let me?"

What exactly happens? Do you get any error messages or any messages for that matter when the file in question goes red?

Cheers :P

HI..I just joined this forum for the reasons in this board. There are a couple of people that seems to be on every server I have that WON'T let you have their files. You wait for 2-3 days in que and they either shut down certain servers or just disconnect you. One in particular will allow you to get some of the file and then cancels you and you can never get back on to him to finish the file. I had requested to be restarted to finish and got no answer. I put myself back in que and the same thing kept happening. Once I was down to 1 and he jumped me back up to like 89. I messaged him to ask why/how that happened and again no response from him. Finally after weeks of this I messaged again and told him that if we don't share, why are we all here? I share over 9000 files so I didn't understand. I have been told he doesn't 'share' he only 'trades' and if he doesn't like your albums he won't let you have his. My question is: Why is he still allowed to be on winmx? Shouldn't people get banned like the leeches do? Problem is is that there are only 2 or 3 that seem to have the same files so you can't go elswhere to get them (at least here on winmx). I have found another sight to download my files but I really miss the sharing here on winmx. Is there anyway to let servers know what these few are doing? I have talked to many others who have had the same problem with these few people. btw I am now on his ignored list so I will have to have someone else get the album for me.......geeesh.  Thanks for letting me air my complaint

unfortunately there isnt much one can do....................
like any network there isnt even a requirement that you share, thou its given being on a p2p that you at least share something....................some folks are just weird what else can you say...............
there is no way to enforce sharing as such, and if certain people want to play games, then personnally id post there nics and there antics..............someone may know them and be able to find out wat the issue is.......................and at best it lets other users know that these particular ppl are assholes, so dont waste ya time downloading from them.......................

It dies happen sometimes :( Some people just like to tade or leech. All I can say is that we must not be bothered with these people and look at the many more people who actually share files, and let people enjoy what they have enjoyed too.
99% of people share. 1/2 % trade and the other 1/2 % leech. It's always like that in any network. Best use mxmoniter or leech hammer and not bother about :)

Hmmm.  There's a situation I'd like to just toss into the mix here.

This morning I read my charts and got my lists together from the usual sources and began my searching. I tagged the return "hits" for download in the usual manner and went on about my business. Later, when I came back to my computer, I noticed that  most of the queues had turned into completed downloads but a few d/l's were still in progress. One in particular was going REALLY QUICKLY.  I had something like a 75kbps transfer rate coming from the one source.

Whenever I notice this, I do a quick BROWSE on the premise that, if the person has one file I like, perhaps our tastes are similar and there are a few more files I can quickly grab while the going's good. My browse indicated that the person was sharing 0 files. How did that happen?  How was it possible that I was getting a file from someone who (A) obviously was a search "hit" at some point; but (B) whose BROWSE indicated no shared files?

Perhaps this is more common than people realize and some of these assumed "leeches" who're constantly being seen on the network are not really as lecherous as they're being made out to be.

...idle curiosity and something to ponder.

Do a whois. That does help too. A whois will show the actual number of files shared. So if they do not appear in the browse, then wait for sometime, the files will appear.

I think that he must have probably unshared the file as soon as he downloaded it (or something like that) . So that's why when you browsed him, you didn't get any results.
If I start downloading the file from you and you unshare it, still the transfer continues as the file is still there in the harddrive. Even if you disconnect (but do not close winmx) the transfer will still continue. Connections once established will stay until the program is terminated or the connection drops.

Cheers :P

I've met a couple of suspect "leeches"-they usually say (when asked-if I'm browsing their files)they've just downloaded MX so I give them a day or two then have a look at their file share.Often it's set at zero-hammer them! How hard can it be to convert files to mp3 and share!

Typicially, most people will have mp3's on their computers. I just give them the link and allow to download once. Sharing files is a 2 minute job. If they still don't toe in line, I'll ignore them. However, I'll always ask. It's better as someof them may be genuine...

I've been using WinMX since it's early days and lately I just leave my computer running 24/7.
There are many users out there who seem to take a lot of sadistic pleasure by disconnecting downloads, and I mean good, fast downloads, just before they reach 100% complete. I've had that happen to me many a time. Personnaly I never disconnect anybody, not even the so called "leeches" or ridiculously slow uploads. Everybody has to start somehow and net traffic can and is slow at times. But to all you mean bastards out there, and you know who you are, F U too!

I'm the same way, Sasq....the problem I have right now, is I recently (within the last month) connected my computer to my router & reconfigured everything to prepare for my daughter getting her computer.  I shared plenty of files, but now I'm not able to because the router is blocking it & I can't seem to get it set up to accept people.  I've had a couple of people disconnect me because of it, but I can't get the answer.  I worked with Linksys all day to try & solve the problem & they were no help.  And yes, most people are good about others downloading, but I have had problems with people disconnecting while I'm trying to get a long file, like a video.
