Capt Copyright - Breaking Child Protection Laws ?
« on: August 12, 2006, 12:34:02 am »
It seems the shameful RIAA propaganda character Capt Copyright is breaking the law in Canada.

When the news broke of Captain Copyright, advocates and regular internet users alike expressed their outrage for what they generally considered a one-sided view on Copyright.

"The most disturbing aspect of the Captain Copyright advertising campaign is the targeting of children with propaganda-style tools. Advertising Standards Canada, a self-regulating trade association, reminds us that advertising to children is illegal in Quebec [Authors note: a province located on the Eastern half of Canada] and its Canadian Code of Advertising standards provides guidelines for the rest of Canada. It explicitly states that exploiting children's credulity, lack of experience or sense of loyalty is forbidden. [...] Captain Copyright is a unilateral initiative on the part of access Copyright and reflects its own perception, not the broader Canadian perspective."

The letter closes with the following, "CLA insists that Access Copyright withdraw the site until the broader copyright community can assist Access Copyright in implementing an unbiased and balanced presentation of the rights of creators, rights-holders and users."

As I always say when I read of the Cartels attempting to exploit children by suggesting fair use activities are crimes, perhaps the perpetrators of this particular one should go to prison for it, attacking the innocence of children with lies is the work of scum.

I guess it's because they are the only ones who don't know their shameful acts. :( So rob them of their innocence and turn them into blind believers

An update on the story folks  :?

Last week, Slyck reported on the statement released by Access Copyright. While this move showed an initiative and effort to improve the 'educational tool,' it might be interesting to note how well it fared with the critics.

Another aspect of the controversy in the meantime also appears to be requests for funding from the government. This information came about by Michael Geist. He reported "documents just obtained under the Access to Information Act reveal that Access Copyright has been looking to Canadian Heritage to provide funding for the Captain Copyright campaign. On May 1, 2006, an internal memo was sent to the Director General of Cultural Industries indicates that Access Copyright was seeking funding for Captain Copyright and recommending that the matter be discussed by senior management."

So now it seems they want the public to pay for their pro-industry and anti-consumer views that they wish to push upon children ?

Captain Copyright was an image that rose to certain levels of fame. Unfortunately for Access Copyright, the firm that created the cartoon character, most of the fame was unwanted. Bloggers and advocates condemned the character for being "one sided". Now the Captain Copyright education tool is offline as it undergoes "revision".

It seems that someone was listening to the mounting public disgust at the one sided picture put forward by access copyright, I hope the character returns and deliver real information about fair use rights as well as a general run down on the overall copyright legislation.
