download speed changed drastically
« on: August 18, 2006, 02:37:48 am »
I have been having a problem lately with downloading speeds. I normally would download at about 30-40 k/s. All of a sudden it is down to under 1 k/s. This just happened over night. I am on a satellite dish and don't use a router. I am behind a firewall.

does this only happen with winmx? or are all downloads affected, does your isp have limits to  how much you can download per month & have you exceeded limit?
Blessed is he who expecteth nothing, for he shall not be disappointed.

Does your winmx connect properly? Do you get search rssults and do uploads run fine ? Try to uninstall winmx, remove all winmx rtelated rules and do a clean install again and put all the rules again.
The winmx link is :

Cheers :P
Reconnect to winmx with the blocking patch :)

Everything elsa works fine. I have been able to download hundreds of files before via Winmx without any problems. I'll try removing/installing Winmx again.

I never payed that much attention before, but I was watching my bandwith as I was downloading and I noticed that my speed would drop drastically when "open nap traffic" would show up on my download bandwith. Is this considered leeching? Is there a way to stop this ?

that would mean the bandwidth was being used by something opennap related... for example if you are downloading/uploading to opennap users, those downloads should appear the same as normal ones in terms of download speeds

of course it is possible if the total speed of your connection drops when opennap then your ISP could be responsible for that, in which case not using opennap may solve it

Try once without using any opennap server and please tell if the same thing happens or not, I mean tell if the speeds reduce or not

By the way, if your ISP is throttling you'd get very low speeds and most importantly, they would not tell you about it :) But if otherwise your speeds are in the normal range, then I guess we may be able to rule out ISP in this case.

I FOUND THE PROBLEM. You may want to pass this along. I tried everything possible including taking winmx off/on. Still had the same problem. Then I went to search my computer for any other type of files that could be causing this. I found it. A small little executable file called "WINMX KILLER". I don't know how I got it. It might have been attached to one of the files I downloaded. I deleted it and everything is back to normal. PLEASE PASS THIS INFORMATION ALONG TO EVERYBODY ELSE

there is a small program that goes by the name winmxkiller that comes in the installer, that has the purpose of closing winmx if it's running during install and should be deleted after, that one does nothing to winmx except close it when run though so shouldn't have effected it... assuming that's the program you're referring to

either way, if it's sorted, that's good to hear anyway :-)
