So, when I set it to "Unable to accept...", does that mean I just won't get as many Search results, coz the ones that aren't set to "Accept..." won't work for me and so won't display?

But if I set it on "Accept...", then I'll get more results but many of them will wind up not downloading for me if my firewall is in fact in the way? Is that how it works?

it won't effect search results, but when you go to download a file if both you and the other user are set as unable to accept inbound connections then it will come up with a message telling you both users firewalled and you will be unable to download from them

as for the %age of users that you would have that problem with, it does really vary a lot depending on the type of files you generally get, but you should notice if it's a major problem of not, at least if it is then you know what the problem is

Gee, I've NEVER gotten ANY message in my WinMX app, just alotta songs turning to red on the Transfers page and not downloading.

Do all versions on all OS's get "messages" while trying to download songs?

you have to spot it as the transfer turns red & click the little + beside it (which shortly vanishes) in order to see the message.. & no it's not OS dependant, it's there even on win 95.. but you do actually have to check it

If you want to see the messages .... Go to Winmx settings -->File transfers. Uncheck the little box for 'purge inactive download sources' and 'clear incomplete download sources', and check the little box for 'new downloads expanded by default'. This should display your download sources and the reason for it's transfer stopping and keep it displayed until you select 'purge users' tab on your transfers page.

The upside... you don't have to be too quick to catch the reason for failed downloads, the downside you have a page full of red user-names and messages, especially if you are multi-point downloading.. until you purge.

Alright, thanks, this is great to know! Gonna try it both ways, by changing settings at first (just did it), and maybe just trying to catch it later (so I won't have all those red user namew collecting), once I know what I'm looking for.

Btw, what is "multi-point downloading"?

that just refers to downloading from several users at once - if 2 users have the file you can get it from both of them to combine their speeds and get it faster (and also take up slots on 2 users instead of 1... so it's not completely good for a network to support it, but winmx does)

Wow, how does one do that? Keep in mind, I have dialup internet access!

then generally, you don't get much faster than <whatever you can currently get> - lol

and you generally select a file with multiple sources, then winmx downloads from them automatically

it really doesn't help appreciably with dialup, as your incoming bandwidth is so restricted, with cable or dsl it can help, by letting you get the files faster.. in which case the problem km pointed too is less of one.. yes you occupy 2 slots.. but conversly you occupy them a shorter time, so the queues move faster..

OK, I think I get the multi-point downloading then, you're downloading from multiple sources all at once then.

It sounds like WinMX does it for you automatically if you select a song that has multiple sources - yes? In other words, you don't have to do anything special, or anything at ALL to use this technique.
