TCP Connections and UDP Packets Settings
« on: September 10, 2006, 02:18:39 pm »
I have a question about my WinMX Settings --

I'm just not sure how to set the Incoming "TCP Connections" and "In/Out UDP Packets" settings.

I do have a free version of ZoneAlarm firewall on my Win98 SE system. I do not have cable or DSL router or LAN networking of any kind. I just have a solo computer on dialup modem to the internet.

I can select what PROGRAMS I allow into my system via ZoneAlarm, but I have no clue about "makine a map to my UDP or TCP port", as suggested in those WinMX settings.

So, which option should I use for those 2 items, the top one (Listen/send/receive on designated port), or the bottom one (Unable to accept/send/receive on designated port)?

Thanks for any help you can send my way!

If you just have Zone Alarm and NO other Hardware Firewall in your Modem or Router then you should be able to use the ports.
This means you can put in the default ports (or any other ones you like), which are 6699 for TCP and 6257 for UDP.
To make sure Zone Alarm allows WinMx with the new settings I recommend removing it from Zone Alarm.
If you now restart winmx with those new settings Zone Alarm will pop up again and ask you to allow Winmx again.
Zone Alarm will then map all ports Winmx uses automatically and everything should work fine.

Wow, that's brilliant! Thanks for answering my question so precisely and directly. Now I know exactly what to do!

Okay, I just DID it in fact....and I didn't even have to shut down WinMX (didn't want to lose my Searches) - ZoneAlarm popped right up soon after I deleted WinMX from its list of Programs to accept (I guess coz the program was open and a decision had to be made), and I just checked to allow it again.

Hope that works, without closing down the program I mean.

Thanks a million -- Joanne.

Any port changes or other connection settings that are changed in winmx require you to restart it for these settings to apply.
If you haven't changed anything it doesn't matter though.

In case something doesn't work after you start winmx the next time you can still remove it from Zone Alarm and allow it again same as you did just now :)

So then, I guess you're saying I DON'T have to restart after just removing it from ZA and then re-allowing it in. Gotcha.

If everything works as it is - don't touch it. :D

If you have problems the next time you're starting up winmx try to remove and allow it again with ZA.
If that doesn't help come back again and we'll see what's up then 8)

Things seem okay in my WinMX, I mean, searches are turning up song selections, although all of the ones I've been clicking on to download have turned red and inactive in the Transfers page lately, just the luck-of-the-draw I think.

If I don't get a song to actually download shortly, I'll be back!

(So then, I do NOT have to Restart after that cancellation and re-adding of WinMX to ZoneAlarm allowed programs, right?)

do you get thousands of search results that don't download? it sounds like it could be a problem with the fake flooders - do you have the latest winmxgroup patch? if not go to www.winmxgroup.com and install it, it filters out the flooders so if that is the problem then it should fix it

Well, I got the "Install-3.0-MultiVer.exe" patch. Was told that's the best one and all-inclusive, i.e. it blocks the RIAA and eliminates all the fake file offerings. Right?

So, do I really need anything else?

Also, I don't get "thousands of search results that don't download", just a few oddballs I've been looking for forever that won't download, so I'm guessing it's the particular songs rather than the program that's the problem. Some more popular, more easily-attainable songs (with many more versions available for download) have downloaded fine.

Yeah, I usually DO find what I'm looking for if I'm persistent and patient enough!  :P

These days, I think I'm having difficulty more because the songs I'm looking for simply haven't been uploaded by anyone who's out there sharing, there are so many fewer peers now because of all the hoopla with file-sharing and problems with the WinMX program a while back (needing patches, if you could find them). I mean, initially, when my program stopped working and I did a Google search, I just came up with tons of ads for what turned out to be the WinMX PAYING version. I was about to give up, but then my boyfriend randomly went to page 6 or 7 of the Google search results and Voila, he found that original Pie Patch by some miracle and we were back in the game!

So, here I still am....

Watta you mean by "test your file transfers"? You mean to see if my program is working/downloading files properly?

How can they test that?

Some one will browse you and try to download files from you... if it works, then your uploads work fine....
Then someone will ask you to browse them and see if you can download files from them.....
Thatway...

Cheers :P

I have news to report! --

I was originally informed -- " If you just have Zone Alarm and NO other Hardware Firewall in your Modem or Router then you should be able to use the ports."

So, I've been using the default settings for the TCP and UDP port options, with nothing downloading lately

So, just now I tried switching my settings to the bottom option ("Unable to accept...) for TCP and UDP ports, and then deleted and re-allowed WinMX in ZoneAlarm, and Voila, I'm back ontrack downloading songs again! Yeeeeee-haw!

Maybe it's a fluke, but hopefully the trend will continue!....We'll see....Sounds rather finicky really.

That's the last option one can take... lol but it will surely work...
Keep trying to do things the proper way once in a while.... may click sometime....

So are you telling that you can download songs better now? Then that's fine too...
Before you had changed the settings, did you get even one upload going green? or dod all uploads timeout?

Cheers :P

Once I changed the TCP/UDP settings to the default ports per this forum's advice, I noticed nothing was downloading, When I put the settings back to the bottom option ("Unable to accept..."), my luck changed.

Of course, it could be just that, i.e. "luck". Alot of the songs I've been trying to get still won't download (they're oddballs), but one that failed before worked now, and another 6 new ones worked (i.e. ones I never tried with the other settings). So, hard to be absolutely certain, but I think I've got the correct settings now.

that means you set winmx to use inbound connections, but did not allow those connections in a firewall or forward in a router somewhere, so those connections failed... it is best to be able to accept inbound connections, as set how you are (unable to accept inbound) means that you are unable to exchange files with other users unless they are able to accept inbound connections

>> set how you are (unable to accept inbound) means that you are unable to exchange files with other users unless they are able to accept inbound connections <<

But I SHOULD be using this setting (unable to accept inbound), right? Otherwise I'd be doing what you mentioned in prior paragraph, i.e. using inbound connections, but then not letting them in thru my firewall. That sounds pointless.

So, the "Unable to accept..." setting, which I just mentioned seems to be working better now, is in fact the solution for me, right???
