Auto Find Sources / Auto Enter Queue
« on: October 15, 2006, 04:56:03 pm »
I'd like to open a thread on setting the AFS/AEQ levels.

Presumably, if one is going to be away from one's computer for a while (say all day, while at work) and one has a boatload of
"INCOMPLETE_..." files (s)he would like to acquire/complete, it would seem as though setting the AFS level at "10 Minutes" and the AEQ threshold  to "100" would optomize the odds for successful transfers.

A long, long, long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, I remember reading arguments that this wasn't so; that the AEQ should be bumped to below 100.  I don't remember the basis for them. To be honest I didn't pay attention because all I had was a stupid dial-up connection back then and there was no reason to fiddle with such irrelevancies.

Now that I'm older, more experienced, ready to listen and --oh, yes-- have my home boxes sitting on a T1 connection, I would like to re-examine the available wisdom where these settings are concerned.

well.. it's like this.. if everyone sets AEQ at 100.. then lots of queues fill to that length.. during *that* period you get into them.. after you don't... if everyone leaves them at the default (10) queues are full at 10... & you don't get in those... *but* when the download in that user's queue finishes.. you only have to wait thru 9 dls instead of 99 to get the file that's in the newly available slot...

it averages out.. but the *theory* is.. low AEQ values = short queues & that's good for everyone...

the difficulty is all the other ppl who set AEQ to 100 & get in slot #11 so slot #10 never becomes available for the person with AEQ set at 10...

You pays your money & takes your choice ... as the saying goes.
Blessed is he who expecteth nothing, for he shall not be disappointed.

AFS will also only work if there are few sources, so a file with lots of sources if you set your AEQ to 100 you might join all of their queues at position 100, then you have enough sources so AFS stops working

later on someone else comes online with no queue at all (perhaps they only have that file shared) your winmx is sitting there with plenty of sources so doesn't do a search, you don't find that source, they go offline again and you're stuck in a queue, but at least now you're up to position 90 in most of them ;-)

also if leaving it for a long time, set the AFS to a higher value - if you set it to say 30 minutes then it still checks often enough to get most users who come online, but sends out less searches on the network (the more searches everyone sends out the less effective other users searches will be)

TY KM :)
That did answer a question I had... I had never seen a queued file ever look for sources, unless I did it manually. But that is a good rather than a bad thing I guess...

Your AFS and AQS settings depend largely on the type of files you download. If you download rare files, best set it at 100. Any source is better than no source in this case.
If you like to have popular songs or files, best set it lower so than you can downlaod it faster and you don't hog many people's queues. And you spend lesser time in queues as well

Cheers :P

I would suggest a low default aeq, and if you seem to never find any sources for a certain file, then bump up that one file to 100. Same thing for afs, set it at a longer default time interval, >30min.
