Whats The Problem With Downloading And Uploading ?
« on: October 25, 2006, 05:15:01 pm »
This problem has been occuring for the past couple of days.
Every time I fileshare with someone, there ok 100% but my download works for a few seconds and then its reduced and stuck to a speed of 0.00. Then connection has timed out.
Sometimes it happens vice-versa mine works in downloading while someone whom I,m sharing their files in upload reduces to zero. Connection timed out also.
I have MxMonitor and I already set up router settings from port forward website.
Windows Firewal and Norton anti-virus are already set up to accept winmx. No longer in primary, but in secondary.

Can you help me please ?

Hi luverman36617,

First thing that comes to mind with this type of problem is that you may be suffereing from interference from your ISP, many are known to have this problem with ISPs that throttle or deny even bandwidth for p2p use, specifically WinMX.  That said I cant say that i know for sure this is whats happening with you, as your on Bellsouth and Im not aware of anyone else having this issue.. they may be and i havent seen it myself yet.  Thats how it starts.. you wake up one day and they have started up the software in your area..

The other possibility is they are limiting you for high usage.. a call to them may be a good idea esp if your speeds test normal with WinMX off.  You can do a speed test here:
http://www.dslreports.com/stest/0

That test needs to be done with everything off except that test.
If your results are fairly normal for you ine speeds then I would be saying they are throttling  the WinMX.  If they are port changes can help in a few cases but usuallly its a ISP change to get around it.  They may however, as some DSL companies tend to do.. be limiting your speeds at times or for high usage.

Now all that aside I would also remove mxmoni from the equation and check your uploads/downloads on mx without it.

I EVEN TRIED IT WITHOUT MXMONITOR, BUT IT'S STILL DOING THE SAME THING - UNABLE TO PROCESS P2P. I WENT TO THAT WEBSITE YOU GAVE ME. THE RESULTS FROM THE TEST WERE 1236/215KBPS (WHATEVER THAT MEANS).

BY THE WAY, THESE ARE MY PC SPECIFICATIONS:
HEWLETT-PACKARD COMPAQ PRESARIO
MICROSOFT WINDOWS XP HOME EDITION SERVICE PACK 2
704MB OF RAM
AMD SEMPRON 1.80GHZ
WINDOWS FIREWALL
NORTON ANTIVIRUS 2003
DSL ROUTER: WESTELL
ISP: BELLSOUTH
TCP: 16699
UDP:16257

Please turn off caps.
1236/215KBPS
mean that you can download with a speed of 1236 KBPS and upload at a speed of 215 KBPS.
Which means that you must be getting speeds of about 175 kbytes per second in wonmx.
This seems a lot like ISP intefernce like Me Here said.

Cheers :P
Reconnect to winmx with the blocking patch :)

SamSeeSammy,,, this is my results, after making the one fix the broadband site recommended,

1293 / 314 (Kbps)
(157.8 / 38.3 KB/sec)
Compared to the average of 684 tests from pacbell.net:
* download is 47% worse, upload is 28% worse

One question I have, is that number in bits or bytes? Another way I read them, little b or big B?

 -- 1293Kbps / 8 = 161.625,, close to the above 157.8KB??
 -- 314Kbps / 8 = 39.25,, again close to the above 38.3KB

-- am I reading the numbers right?

This sounds like half of what I got when I first got this service several years ago. It also tells me I have much room for improvement with up/down loads within winmx. I am lucky to see another transfer to me at 10kbs, and is that little k or big K?

The KB vs Kb/s has always confused me as well .. here is a great tool from DSLreports that helps to calculate but from the reading I had to do once I saw your post yes.. you are pretty much on target there

http://www.dslreports.com/calculator

They have lots of great tools here:

Now J.D.
This most certainly does sound like your ISP is throttling WinMx, once your sure you have WinMX allowed correctly in the XP Firewall and if your Nortons has Worm protection then allow it there as well, if this continues then its the ISP

The other possibility that occurs to me is a problem with either the phone line or inline filter between the modem & phonr socket, it's worth substituting the last item (they're cheap) & then running ping -t against a good server (say google) for a couple of minutes (use ctrl +c to stop it) it will then show you stats, if it shows any significant packet loss, I'd get your phone company to check the line out (are your phone calls affected by noise? that would be another indicator).
My brother has 2 phone lines & has similar problems if he plugs his modem in one of them & not with the other.. (just a thought).
Blessed is he who expecteth nothing, for he shall not be disappointed.

I would like to know why I can't receive much music as I used too.  I am not able to just type in the title of the song and get results.  Why is this happening all of a sudden.  This has been going on with me for weeks.

I have bellsouth and you need to use different ports.  Those won't work.

so out of curiosity, what good ports should I use if the current ones will not work? And does it matter if my DSL is about 3 years old or is it time to contact my ISP about getting another router/modem?

I have found that once the ISP found out the port winmx uses and the alternatives people were using, they got wise and block those ports too.

I am currenlty using 7699 & 7257.  I have in the past used 15699 & 15257.  It really doesn't matter, I tried about four different ports before I found some that worked.  I have the westell modem that you have, and a lynksys router.  I forwarded the ports on the router and I can basicly do all the winmxing I want to do.  You just have to have patience to try different things.  I have also used the UPnP ports with success, but went back to my basic setup. You know, if it isn't broke don't fix it.

I don't think you need a new modem.  Bellsouth will charge you for it.

Good Luck I hope new ports gets you sharing and trading.
