Vonage Customer - Can't Upload/Download
« on: November 08, 2006, 04:05:09 am »
I can connect just fine; searches are limited from what they SHOULD be (without my Vonage router), but all transfers time out. I can FTP, browse via HTTP, use my VPN, and everything else. My correct ports are open on my network switch, and the problem is Vonage because when I remove the box, this upload/download problem happens. Does anyone have any advice for me? Thanks

Did you allow winmx in any forewalls that you might be having?
Also check your port forward again. The internal Ip of the computer moght have changed. Make sure it is the sam e as the one for which you forwarded thet ports.
Alternatively you can try out the 3.1 beta patch, if you don't use opennap. It has a small bug that causes OPENNAP uploads to timeout, but other wise it's fine.

the router vonage have given you is almost certainly using NAT and therefore you will need to forward the ports in it

what is the make/model of it?

I have a Linksys RTP300. Any info you can give me or point me to would be helpful. I don't know how to forward ports, although I may be able to find it on the Vonage online help.

Thank you.

Thank you for your reply.

Yes, when I place my Vonage box INSIDE my firewall/router, all is fine. I have my firewall/router configured with the proper ports. It works perfectly. However, when I place the Vonage box OUTSIDE my firewall/router (connected directly to my modem, then the firewall/router connected to the Internet THROUGH the Vonage box), searches produce few results, and I cannot upload or download files. The reason I need to connect to the Internet THROUGH the Vonage box is I want Vonage to have the bandwidth priority. For instance, when uploading/downloading files, sometimes conversation breaks up because the file transfer canabalizes the bandwidth. I want the voice to take all the bandwidth it needs, then hand off excess to the file sharing/computer. So it's a mystery why it works just fine inside my router/firewall, but when connecting directly to the Internet, uploading/downloading doesn't work. ALL other Internet functions work - surfing, email, etc. I have a full connection, but it appears SOMETHING is being blocked.

Thank you again.

Go to www.portforward.com and see your router model there. There will be a tutorial on how to forward ports in winmx there.
I would have posted you the link but i'm a bit too lazy this morning... sorry lol
