Kb/s setting to zero

Hi I am on primary connection, win xp sp2, using new patch on winxm but over past week when i am trying to download stuff they go green and start downloading and after about a minute about 90% of my Kb/s figures go to 0.
Please advise thank you

I,m pretty sure from what you describe Mark that your ISP is "throttling" your bandwidth, this is a particularly dirty trick to keep you from using the service you pay for.
Most ISPs only do this if you have exceeded a limit for the month etc but its becoming common for the smaller ones to do it while they think they can get away with it, you are on a large one that I myself use so I,m pretty sure it must be for overuse of the monthly quota, they do have a page for you to check your monthly usage and I would start their first.

I do not think it is because i have exceeded monthly limit because (1) i have unlimited usage (2) i am still able to download some stuff.

example - if i have 20 items to download which are all green, 5 of them will download and the other 15 will just got to 0 kb/s then turn red after a couple of minutes.

Yes machine has got new patch on it from above address.
It has got nothing to do with monthly download limit because i have unlimited downloads and some downloads are still coming in.

I have been watching winmx closely over the past 2 weeks and discovered the following:

in the daytime 3 days in a row I have downloaded 400 songs per day, after 6pm I am lucky if i can download 5 songs, all my downloads go to 0 K/S and time out.

I'm sorry but I have been on this site before and I have had really helpful supervisors and yet lately I find that the supervisors dont know what they're on about...

Can anybody realistically help me please.

Realistically it looks like your ISP is throttling P2P traffic at what it considers "peak times" & the only solution I can even suggest with any hope of resolving it is a change of ISP

that looks very much like ISP throttling, the fact that it suddenly happens at peak time makes it certain that is the case - as nothing would suddenly change your end, the only change that happens is the traffic on the ISPs network increases at that time as does their desire to throttle

it has all the hallmarks of it, if you wanted to be 100% sure you could do a test with someone during the day, then again during the evening - but it would probably be pointless in the end

the only thing that would give any doubts about it is that you are posting from a BT connection, they aren't known for throttling p2p specificaly (which would cause the 0k/s) although their residential customers they do like to throttle the connection if they don't like your usage and do have (very low IMO) monthly limits (if you signed up ages ago to "unlimited" then check again, they changed it on you... and you're lucky you didn't get a huge bill for "using too much" like some people who signed up for unlimited...), although a business connection is normally fine with them (which is what most p2p users who use BT have, for that very reason)

so i would say that from reading your posts it is almost 100% certain it's being throttled, except for you posting from a BT connection, which if that's the same place you're having the problems, would put some doubt there as they normally only throttle the entire connection which would just cause slowness and not cause them to drop to 0k/s

Mark just so you are aware,

We are ones that had the same issues as you have except instead of limiting us they tried to charge us for every gig we went over thier (later impossed) limits to a preexisting Unlimited connection contract.  Instead of talking to BT we simply went else where and regreted it, especially after learning of BTs business line options.  We are now with them on a true unlimited connection that we love.  I do believe you wont get much info about this from the residential folks. so be sure to get ahold of the Business line ppl and talk about switching..

They were great to us.

the first time they said "then leave if you don't like it", and you did.... then you went with another ISP and didn't like it and left (well that wasn't the case, but they don't know that).. no wonder they were nice to you, you made it clear you mean business, so need a business line to match ;-)

Im not entirely sure what you mean there Stoneycreek, because our online help is right here and obviously your here ... lets just skip that and move to the actual winmx problem your having shall we...

I'm going to need more details from you about what is happening.  Im not sure if your Not connecting as in getting flashing yellow light (no network connection) or if your having issues with downloads or uploads connecting...

I need to know what version of WinMX you use?
Does it get a network connection?
   a. If it does not is this a new problem or have you just reinstalled winmx?
   b. Do you get connections at any time of the day and loose it others?

If its uploads or downloads your having troubles with:
Do you have a router or dsl modem that may need configuring?
What firewalls do you use?

Thanks Stoney... we'll try to get you working when we know more about this.

Hi All!!
I have the exact same problem as the OP and it started about 3 weeks ago. I haven't changed any settings or softawre and it almost appeared randomly. I am not a high user and don't download much apart from the ocassional video or song.
I have the latest WinMX 5.4 with patch and use Windows XP. I have tried the various ports mentioned here and have made sure my Firewall isn't blocking access to WinMX.

The initial connection to WinMX is fine but it seems to break every now and again.
After readingnthese postings, I am convinced I'm being "throttled" also. The same issues arise, lack of search results, initial downloads going to 0kb/s then timing out, uploads timimg out, etc...
I have switched to TalkTalk about 4 months ago so maybe they are the culprit? I never had this problem with OneTel.
 I'm now resorting to using Limewire but even there downloads are a measly 2 to 3 KB/s but at least they don't time out as often.

Is there any way around this?

hello otto welcome to the help section do u by any chance have a router and if u do can u post back what make and model it is plz as it seems like a router problem or it may infact be your isp

Hi,
By router do you mean the broadband connection? I have a Speedtouch 330 USB/ADSL which is what I used with OneTel and gave me no problems. The settings for it were changed though when I installed the TalkTalk software.

I should point out that this lack of uploads/download bytes occurrs at any time of day as I've tried it morning, afternoons and evenings.

I'm not all that computer literate so any help will be appreciated!

hello otto i've had a look at the speedtouch its doesnt seem to be a modem problem rather an isp problem can u come to the room on mx and we will see if we can help u out better?

just copy this add: WinMXWorld.com Help_75D9EFD5B4BE and put it into the channel list bar and press join
