MS And DRM Failure
« on: December 15, 2006, 09:52:14 pm »
MS is talking tough over hackers defeating their technology, but wheres the DRM fix ?

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/5294750.stm

Quote
Microsoft has said it is working to close a breach of its technology that protects music digital files from copyright infringement.
A program called Fairuse4wm has been posted on the net and is said to be capable of bypassing Microsoft's Digital Rights Management (DRM) system.

It could spell problems for internet music shops, potentially enabling users to download unlimited files.
Microsoft said it hoped to deploy an update to fix the problem soon.

DRM is used to control people's access to digital data.
It is commonly employed on music downloading sites to restrict the use of music purchased and downloaded online to ensure copyright is not infringed.

Talk is cheap as we all know, I say stop talking about making a fix and fix the thing if your aim is to help the Cartel extract revenue from consumers.

I am morally opposed to DRM systems as they do nothing for society except create artificial monopolies on otherwise worthless product and penalise the blind and the poor, altruistic is something Microsoft is not.

No amount of software or hardware encryption will ever be perfect. As long as you have the actual encrypted media, it can be decyphered somehow. It may take longer for some things, but there is no lock ever created that is 100% secure.

if it can be played at all then at that point it's decrypted.. it hardly seems an impossible task to capture the decrypted output from whatever into a format without drm.. as i'm sure wil continue to be proved every time someone's next "foolproof" system is broken just like all the others....

Then too, you can record the sound and reconvert it back.
Like plugging the speaker outlet into the microphone and start recording

Cheers :P
