Downloading problems
« on: January 13, 2007, 11:54:04 am »
hi there, I am not to fairly new to Winmx. I had it on my old computer and it worked fine. Now that I have xp pro. It just sits there. It is uploading fine. But I have red and tried to do the tcp thing. If I do that, then winmx won't come on. I have been trying to do fix all this for days now. I have DSL Verizon.
I have my aniti virus(McAfee) which came with the computer dismantled. I have went into connection properties, and did the network thing. I even went as far as getting my ip, default gateway, dns server listed. when I did that it did not want to even connect. I have un-installed and re-installed.  I have no updates, my firewall is turned off. And all I get is red listings, and Ques. When I even get a download, it is not a strong connection cause it goes back into the red. I like winmx very much, but then there was a time, when I went to download  Winmx, it was not avaiable. But now that it is available, I can not get it to work. I have a Dell Dimention if that matters any. I hope it is not my server, cause I have downloaded from Edonkey, which too is slow but it downloads, and Limewire. I like winmx, cause you can get virtually anything and not limited to what your looking for.
Can you help me?

Hi Cheryl,

Welcome to the site and welcome back to WinMX...Lets see here..

OK first of all lets make sure you have the complete correct set up ok.  Since I dont know what version of MX your using now and I want to keep that version the same, but make sure you have an updated patch that filters fakes.  Download this file from here:

WinMX Multi Version W/Patch

Save this to your Computer then run it, making sure to select your 'Current' WinMX version when it asks ie; 3.53 or 3.54.

Then restart WinMX.  If things are better at this point then OK.  But if not then here are two guides that I want you to look through.
Router/Modem Guides
Setting Static IP for XP

Now about that McAfee, you need some firewall and XP comes with one built in that is easy to configure and you more then likely have one in the Modem from Verizon.  So first thing is to make sure your not using all of them.  Leave the one in the modem set as per above page's instructions, check your XP firewall in Control Panel > Firewall Icon > If this is enabled and your NOT going to use McAfee then enable it and configure it as per this link:
XP Firewall Configurations SP2

If you going to use the McAfee firewall then just make sure the XP is OFF.  Remove WinMX from the allowed applications in McAfee (sorry We dont have a good guide on that one) and restart WinMX and let it ask you again to allow it access, give it full access or server status if you can in McAfee.

Then post back to us here and let us know if things are working better, or if you have any questions post them here...

Hi there! I followed your directions, The patch it says at the top "operational" I gather it is working. Now that I did everything, hopefully right, including in the settings of winmx, "send and recieve UDP.
Now, I am waiting for recieve downloads. It is doing nothing. Except waiting for results.. Also too, another thing I noticed, people wanting to download off me, they are getting disconnected.. Am I on the right path here. Is it that  my search is filtering out the fakes?

Also I find this a bit bothering, as I was trying to get winmx up and running, I noticed a lot of people not shareing.. I feel they get these shows"movies" for free, and they want, but do not want to give..

I am using by the way winmx 3.54 beta 4. I went to the web site while surfing and downloaded it from the one you recommend..
Thanks for your help
it is appreciated

It sounds like your Modem Set up is still not quite right or even possibly still some other program on the computer blocking WInMX.  Do this for me as a test

Start WinMX as a secondary connection and tell me if your stuff works ok this way.  Then let me know Cheryl  your getting there and we will get you fixed up ..

lol your welcome Cheryl

OK so then you still have ports blocked somewhere so maybe you should tell me are there any other types of protective software installed including but not limited to your antivirus?

I think we should get that info then if that looks ok proceed to trun off McAfee and use XP instead.. some ppl have issues with McAfee and since i cant really help you configure it we can remove if from the equation and get you working without it for now.  Then go to plan b laters....

hi there!
I deleted McAfee out.. I did that the other day.. It appears all my searches are now red...nothing is downloading..  My firewall says it is off.. I am not that computer literate here to say, I have another program running in the background..

Everything I know of is off..

I went into networks, clicked on property,  put in where it says Internet Protocal (TCP/IP) and in that property I clicked the button to use the following IP address. Now 2 things I did notice, was they are not colored. and my aternate DNS server is the same as prefered. And an error sign came up stating it could not be the same as my prefered DNS server and would not allow me to ad that, so I had to keep it blank. Does that make a difference?

Secondly, I then went in Windows Firewall, the directions showed it to be turned on. I then turned the firewall back on.. Is it that I should have it off? I then went into advance from this point where it says Local area connections, clicked on settings where it says add UDP 6699 + my IP #  then I went in
for TCP and put in the number 6257..and then I closed that out...

thanks for your help
Cheryl

Hi Tanya,

The fact your first one's speeds were so good tells me that its not likely flacuating on your end, usually download speeds are determined by the user you're getting the files from and many things can factor into that as well.

Most Internet accounts folks have have great download speeds say up to 8meg for example but the upload speeds (speeds they can give files at) are much lower like 1meg for example that divided by a few ppl they are uploading to and then also divided by other things they may be using that upload speed for on thier systems.. I think you can see why your ability to download at fast speeds doesnt matter near as much as the uploaders ability to give you speeds.

Your always welcome to have a look at this page:
https://www.winmxworld.com/scripts/bandwidth/

This will test speeds for you, then give recommendations for setting upload limits yourself and could then help stablize your download speeds too.

I can download songs but downloading takes SOOOO long. I tested the bandwidth,  put the recommended number in the limit outgoing bandwidth box, and checked it. Doing that really made no difference, i was wondering what else i could do to speed up the download. Is there anything i could change in the settings to fix or help this problem? Was i adjusting the bandwidth box correctly, without  checking the top box. I really dont understand what settings to fill in to help download and make WinMX work better. I am new with this.                                                                                                                     THANKS! :D
