sky broadband Vs Winmx
« on: February 22, 2007, 07:32:38 am »
hi guys

does anyone know of any issues between skybroadband and winmx

ive been having problems with these; slow speeds and dropped connections most frustrating

I rang what sky jokingly call tech support the first person i spoke to got me to change router settings and told me that would speed things up .. it didnt so i rang back later only to be told that sky broadband's server doesnt support peer2peer filesharing whether legal or illegal and he was surprised i could get these to work at all when i asked if there was anything i could do he replied 'yeah stop using them' (very helpful) he also said that they support point2point instead but this means nothing to me ...any ideas???

Cheers :))))

You mean that you can connect to winmx alright and can download as well, but speed times out to zero.

Basicially I think they don't want to tell you this: They block winmx so that you don't download and use the bandwidth for which you payed.
Your symptons are typical of ISP throttling.
Before that I'd just like you double make sure your ports are forwarded.
Go to www.portforward.com and see your router model there in the router's section.
A tutorial will be given there on how to forward ports for winmx there
Port defaults are:
TCP 6699
UDP 6257

Cheers :P
Reconnect to winmx with the blocking patch :)

sadly i have tried all that and also beeen in the help chat room where a frustrating few hours were spent lol .... one night last week i started to get the speeds i shouldve eg 45-90 kbs down and very similar up as well but even then connections only lasted a few mins at time and i have to reconnect to each user again and again i get alot of stick off other users especially uploaders as they think im doing on purpose to deny them the files  :(
thanks for ur reply

I searched in google and from what I saw...
say some airlines, solutions,rewards, communication.

in one word: nothing
Phone them back and ask them. And while your about it a piece of your mind as well ;)

Now I'm sure it's ISP as you report uploads dying out as well :(
The only solution is to change ISPs
Reconnect to winmx with the blocking patch :)

sky broadband has a capped monthly usage allowance and also a fair usage policy in other words STEAR CLEAR if u want to use any p2p because sure as eggs r eggs your going to get problems  also stay away from bulldog ,tiscalli, pipex and orange broadband.
perhaps someone could suggest a decent isp in the uk without limits and fair usage policy ( another word for throttling or not giving you what you pay for) i believe "me here" uses a bt package but not sure what one perhaps she can enlighten us

Utorrent is ok
limewire: only if you have a lot of ram and exprience. It has, as I've heard form others, a lot of viruses

I believe Me Here uses a business deal/package with Bt.

Cheers :P

you are not tied to a contract btw - they have already invalidated the contract

if they want to insist that the contract is valid and you need to pay them for 12 months, then you can just say that's fine and point out that it also means they have a legal obligation to provide you with that service for those 12 months... along with a refund for the few months you've been with them so far where they have failed to do so

Quote
To protect our network and maintain quality of service for all our users we can temporarily or permanently control or restrict your online activities via Sky Broadband where such activities may have a detrimental effect on other customers’ quality of service and it is reasonable for us to do so (e.g. sending “spam” emails or hosting a website).
allowing you to use p2p is not detrimental to their other customers quality of service, the reason they block it is because it costs them money, no other reason - they use this section as the excuse for blocking p2p, however it does not entitle them to block something because it costs them money, and therefore they are not allowed to do it

their taking money and failing to provide it is against the law, so if they start insisting that the law and contracts be followed then say "yes sure, and which of your directors will be taking responsibility for your theft of my money?" then file a report with your bank and the local police department, theft is theft, you authorised them to take the money to pay for the service, they failed to provide the service then they weren't authorised to take the money, taking money you aren't authorised to take is theft

For what it's worth, I was with Talk Talk and for many years all was fine good uploads/downloads and no problems. Then they went all popular and decided to stop, not just throttle, but stop all P2P. So I chucked them. When I called there disconnection department and told them the reason they said yes we do not allow P2P. I considered Sky but they were too new. Try BT even though they have a FUP, and most ISPs this day do, they have served me well so far.

BT has low usage limits for their residential packages and just send out huge bills to people with no warning - if you go with BT Business then they offer unlimited, so you won't suddenly get a huge bill for going over the limit

the worst ones are the users who signed up for BT unlimited packages but BT suddenly decided without telling them to move them on to a limited package, they still send a bill and insist you either pay it or leave (and no doubt will put it as "failed to pay" to all the credit reference agencies...)
