PG2 and your IP's
« on: March 04, 2007, 01:58:08 pm »
Hi, i noticed after many years of not using winmx that when i DL'd the installer from here and started to connect that these two IP's seem to be going "nuts" in PG2..:

87.118.98.131 and 207.210.117.60 are being detected a DDOS types...what gives? After a bit of searching there seems to be a lot of bickering between a few sites about one or the other being the "Dooer of evil", so im wondering if someone could briefly explain this to me,(minus the politics please, i dont want to sound rude but i just dont care) and if its just a misconfiguration of PG2? Ive attached a screen shot of PG2

Its been a long night so excuse me please if the above sounds rude in any way, its not meant to be.

Thanks, Thoth.

Hi Toth,

Welcome to the site and welcome back to WinMX..

No, your post didn't sound rude what so ever and Many users including myself have only wanted the facts about this .. hence this post I made..

Peerguardian The Facts

Have a read through it when you can and if you still have any questions regarding PG and WinMX Peer caches (the addresses you have above are peer caches) as you can see here:
Cache Status Page

I will admit the foolishness and rhetoric of some of the folks in other camps twisting blatant lies into facts may have received a bit of my own sarcasm in Peerguardian post I'm asking you to read, however its bare bones facts of the problems.

If your using the Patch from WinMXGroup site you don't need PG and its recommended that you don't use it while WinMX is running.

Hi and thank you for the quick response.

Well, silly me, i didnt think to look at the IP's for the cache servers..   That being said, and after following the post(s) on installing Winmx, forwarding ports to my router, allowing it through my firewall,  im finding i cannot connect to the Winmx Peer Network, but i can however connect to OpenNap servers, is PG2 still interfering somehow? (its not running) Also im using Spybot S&D's host file, are the cache servers in that? Sigh, never a good time to install old favourites after overflowing the brain with information.

I realise this has turned into a different topic, so if you prefer me to post in the Connection Problems page, let me know.

Thanks for your time, Thoth.

No Worries Thoth,

And yes I believe that if you not have rebooted then PG is still running background files.  One is called Guard.exe and you may want to see if this is running in your task manager.  The version I have luckily (I have it for testing only) disables when I ask it to.. recently we have seen several users that its not and running either this Guard.exe still or other processes of which I don't have the exact names.  I would uninstall it, and reboot.  Or if your still thinking you need it, change the configuration not to start on Start up,  Start > Run > Msconfig > Start Up Items Tab > Untick PG and anything associated with Pie or Pg.

Then restart and see if your WinMX will connect.

The only entry in the hosts file for the WinMXGroup 3.0 patch is one IP that allows you to see the update bar.  Not crucial for the workings of the connection and filtering it offers just annoying to see that blank white bar.  SpyBot S & D will write protect your hosts file and you may find you still have all the Pie Entries in it, because WinMX Group Installer does fix those its a good idea to maybe shut down SpyBot, rerun the installer, and then when its connected and finished to turn Spybot back on.  As I mentioned this is not about connecting, but simply about removing Pie entries and getting the update bar IP to be written in the hosts file.

Hope I haven't overwhelmed you again.. lol

Yes James thats my point, those are infact WinMX Peer Caches .. and even the newest Peer Cache we got online within the last two weeks has already been added to the p2p list as a dangerous IP.

Not to mention while I'm on a slight indgenous rant here.. there have been hundreds of new IP flooding ranges that took longer to get added and some that are not even on the p2p lists..

So you can make up your own minds where the priority lies within BlueTack's ranks...

Hi again, PG2 does'nt, on my pc at least, continue to have any processess after exiting, so no worries there. Interestingly, I had no problems connecting after 11pm (uk time), so i checked the below link and sure enough, Tiscali (my ISP) was in the list of bad ISP's, so perhaps you may wish to refer others to it with a similar problem. It seems after 11pm is the time they "relax" P2P application download/upload speeds, at least for Tiscali. Other P2P users (not just torrent users) seem to agree that 11pm is indeed the time to connect using P2P applications for unrestricted use, according to the forums i read this morning.

Heres that link http://www.azureuswiki.com/index.php/Bad_ISPs

Thanks again for you prompt help and understanding.

Thoth.

tiscali are known for censoring what you are and aren't allowed to to on their computer... they after all think it's their computer for them to control what you are and aren't allowed to do

there are many better ISPs that you can change to (although a few worse, if you go for the ones that charge so little they can't actually provide the service because it costs them more to deliver it than you are paying... surprise surprise you aren't going to get a service)

of course one plus side with them playing nanny and monitoring everything you do and giving you permission to do some things, you don't have to worry about legal problems, because they have already taken responsibility for your actions... so you can freely use your connection to launch an attack against the various anti-p2p groups websites if you wanted as a way of showing your anger, lol

ironically enough they don't even have a network wide blocking of winmx, they have the ability to exclude customers from their blocking... which they do do, but as far as i am aware the only customers of theirs they have given permission to use the internet are macrovision (yes, tiscali block access to p2p networks for legitimate users, but grant access to the company attacking the networks...)
