Hi Guys,

I was wondering if WinMx interacted with the explorer.exe process. I've noticed that if I run WinMx and Mx Monitor for a couple of days my explorer.exe CPU usage gets really high. Is this normal?

Are you runing anyhting like like MxMoni, what version of Winmx are you using. Are you conected as primary or secondary?

MxMoni has a known memory leak so if you run that try disabling it.

never heard of any major problems with it using up lots of proccessor on secondary on any version

ifyou run primary it will use abit of cpu as running primary you deal with search results from the secondarys connected to you,

Also infrequently winmx updates your files to the primary or as you change primarys, tis may be a another usuage of proccessor on secondary.

Also what power proccessor have you got???

Try this :
Press crtl+alt+delete
now delete the explorer process from the process tab.
the desktop and taskbar will vanish
now, go to the applications tab and click on new task and type "explorer.exe" in it.
Cllick on ok.
Now taskbar and desktop should reappear.

Now see if the explorer.exe still eats cpu...
But a downside is that the winmx icon in the tray will not appear.
although winmx will be still there if you click on the x at the topright of the screen
To reopen winmx, click on the winmx shortcut
To close winmx, end the winmx.exe process in the task manager

running winmx with mxmonitor for long periods there is a GDI leak on XP with themes enabled, this causes windows to run out of resources... the normal symptom people notice is blank white patches appearing everywhere (mstly in winmx, but occasionally in other programs), however depedning on various factors it could also cause problems like that with other processes on the system

either way, microsoft released a fix for that problem (which is a windows XP problem, not a winmx or mxmonitor problem)

either it is what is causing the problem, or it isn't... either way it doesn't hurt to try installing that fix

Well guys thank you so much for the responses,

I am running Mx Monitor so I'm wondering if thats the problem. It doesn't seem to happen all time. Just occasionally. The last time it happened the CPU went back to normal after I closed WinMx and Moni.
I was also wondering if this could have anything to do with downloading AVI files. I was reading that XP has a problem reading AVI's that are incomplete, that it will use a lot of CPU looking for the data file at the end of the file. Is it possible that XP is trying to read the file as it's being downloaded. I don't know.
Thanks for the link KM, I'll try it.
The next time it happens I'll end the process SamSeeSam, and see what that does.
And to answer some of your questions Tiny4eva, I am using the secondary connection with WinMx 3.54 beta 4 and don't laugh at my processor, it's a Celeron M 1.40 GHz. - I know, I know...

Hi BenJr, the video problem on XP that I have seen myself is simply cured by turning off the thumbnail setting in the folder that contains the video files, on many machines merely opening the folder is enough to crash explorer.exe, quick fix is to set the views setting to "details" and that should help avoid yet another XP flaw.
