odd port scanner response
« on: May 16, 2007, 10:23:21 pm »
Hi. I regularly use the winmx port scanner because I have to check each time I use my laptop because it gets assigned a different IP address by my router. I reconfigure the router to suit the laptop each time. All this has worked fine until today, when I did a port scanner check and had a message I have not seen before - "TCP port 6699 is open, but wrong WinMX response"  - meaning winmx will not work. I am not sure why - can anyone explain please?

I'm uncertain why you'd get that response, but i'm assuming from your regular ip changes that your situation precludes setting a static ip address, it might be worth you nipping into the help chatroom WinMXWorld.com Help_A06F7657BABE & asking someone about the 3.1 beta patch, while this beta series is no longer under development, the particular patch will configure most routers via uPnP & could save you lots of hassle with amending forwarding rules.
Blessed is he who expecteth nothing, for he shall not be disappointed.

Thanks for the reply - I am using winmx 3.54 beta 4 btw. I am not too concerned about having the changing IP - it suits other factors in my system, thanks. But I would like to know the meaning of the message I got, if anyone can help.

Basically it means the scanner connected to something on your pc but it either wasn't WinMx or it did connect to WinMx but your ISP is blocking or throttling and the scanner did not recieve the response expected from a WinMx client.

Thanks - it worked normally later on so all is fine - just an aberration I expect, but not one I had seen before.
