Windows Media Center and Xbox 360
« on: June 15, 2007, 04:19:50 pm »
When I network the Xbox 360 via Windows Media Center downloaded movies will not play due to "file error"

I am running on windows Vista.
I have downloaded codec lite http://www.free-codecs.com/K_Lite_Codec_Pack_download.htm

Downloaded avi Movies play correctly with pc windows Media Player
Downloaded avi Movies play correctly with pc Windows Media Center

When I network the Xbox 360 via Windows Media Center downloaded movies will not play due to "file error"
Movies that are provided by Windows Vista at time of Purchase do play correctly and so do all my pictures.

Any idea what Im suppose to be doing to make the movies compatable with Xbox 360?

xbox doesn't support anything standard video codecs, so you need something to convert the files

there are a few ways to do that but most are a little complicated, i don't have an xbox myself so can't recommend anything from experience however having looked at a couple of the options tvsersity looks like the simplest - you can get it for free from http://tversity.com/
(instructions at http://tversity.com/support/quickstart/ it seems fairly straight forward - just looks worse because they put the instructions for every device on a single huge page)

Thanks again for the help!!!   You are always so knowledgable!!!

Im not sure that I want to use the system you recommended, but I will keep it for future reference.  With your help I hav stumbled across another website.

http://www.videora.com/en-us/Converter/Xbox360/index.html

This website will convert avi and and other formats into formats playable on the xbox 360.  wuhu!

I'll download later and let everybody know if it works.

Best Regards

Please be careful with link provided.  I was redirected to another site when i clicked on download.  I am fearless(or stupid) and attempted a few more times to download.

I was succesful at downloading the conversion software and converting all files to mpeg(requirement to play file on xbox 360).

If anyone else wants to use program be cautious as I have not verified any malicious files were downloaded.  If anybody encounters a malicious file, I encourage that you post a message here. The other thing is that the conversion is somewhat slow(1hr per 786 mb) and only can process one at a time.  If anyone has a recommendation for an alernative conversion program let me know...I would grearly appreciate it ;)

there are 2 ways to do it, most programs go for the approach of converting all of the files before playing, that means having a second copy of all of your files, and also adds the extra step of having to convert before you want to watch - that's why i suggested tversity instead as it converts it while you are playing it, so no need to convert in advance or have multiple copies of everything

but if you don't mind convering before you can watch and having multiple copies etc then either method works just as well
