can we have more details? what windows version? are you running in an administrator account or something more restricted?
exactly what does or doesn't happen, does winmx setup run over & over? you just don't connect? you revert to a hosts file??

Help! When I try to run the new patch my antivirus software alerts me that it contains a trojan. What can I do to get WinMx up and running again?

Its not a trojan but because the patch makes changes to the host file your security see`s this as a threat and alearts you to this
i have experienced much the same thing before, all you need to do is turn off your antivirus while the patch is applied and all will be fine (once applied turn back on)

for the latest patch released on july 9 /2007 go to the link here and d/load
https://www.winmxworld.com/tutorials/connection.html
it is a perfectly safe and tested prog and virus free

if your trying to connect as a primary you will need to forward the ports thru the router.........
if your connecting as a secondry the router makes no difference, but any firewalls you have will need to have the approiate access rules for winmx...........
www.portforward.com    is were you go to get the instructions for your router, if this is to technical for you then please visit us here WinMXWorld.com Help_6444D04ABABE        and we will help you with portforwarding all we will need is the make and model number of your router

let us know how you get on

Re: winmx new patch With a modified HOSTS file.
« Reply #9 on: July 12, 2007, 01:04:06 am »
Something is amiss?  Make sure you backup any modified HOSTS file before running a patch!

I have a very large HOSTS file and I use a localhost address of 0.0.0.0 (a valid address) - I do not use 127.0.0.1 which the patch designers seem to think is the only legitimate localhost.

When I attempt to install the patch (mod 2 or 3) it seems to "freeze" - the green installation bar stops and nothing happens, the HOSTS file is frozen at first I assumed that it had hung up.  It seems to me that it is attempting to rewrite the large hosts file and gets lost for at least 40 minutes?  If you forciblly stop the installation the HOSTS file is garbled and you will need to recreate it, all it needs to append ONE line (at the very end)  but instead it adds an additional line "127.0.0.1" winmxworld between EVERY entry.

My suggestion if you have a custom Hosts file is firstly, back it up, secondly, create a dummy, allow the installer to modify the dummy and then delete the dummy.  Append the line 74.208.068.100 to your backup file and then restore the backup.

The entry is 74.208.68.100 not 74.208.068.100

The entry is 74.208.68.100 not 74.208.068.100

I'll get it right yet the entry required is

the installer actually doesn't append that line, only the comment, what it does do is remove entries relating to emergency hosts files which would mess things up, please accept my apology for messing up your particular & very unusual configuration...

I downloaded the patch to my received file folder and installed it no problem.  My hosts file looks like it should

# Do NOT alter the following entry, it is critical for proper operation
#
127.0.0.1   localhost
# The following line (if present) was added by the patch to load the update notification bar message
# If there is no entry here performance will not be affected,
# but you will not see notifications of patch updates
74.208.68.100   www.winmx.com

However when I run WinMX I still get the warning message up on top saying a new patch is available to install.  Did I do something wrong or is this just a glitch?  My WinMX does connect, it's just the update warning that keeps scrolling back and forth.

David the programs from the connection page are self installer's,  just let the one you select  do the required work and then mx will start as normal without you having to do more than agree to a few choices.

Hi Reef, we just recently moved the old update bar to a new address, so I'll investigate this happening soon as possible.

Ok after extensive diagnostics to see 'what the hell had i broken this time'... it turns out that I have NOT broken anything :D

Ok not with the update bar anyway..  :P

IF you have updated to the new patch and are still geting the bouncing annoying (its annoying on purpose) Update bar please  try the following:

Open Internet Explorer
Click on Tools > Internet Options
Under Temporary Internet Files > please click the Delete files button
Restart Your WinMX

See it turns out Bill Gates broke the update bar ...muahahahhahaha
