Bug installing on Win98SE- and solution
« on: July 10, 2007, 09:07:00 pm »
Hi,
I spent a few hours wondering why WinMX update wouldn't work on Win98 second edition, and now I know why- win98 uses "hosts.sam" and win2000/xp uses "hosts", and the installer was creating a file called "hosts" which w98 didn't recognise. I manually changed hosts.sam and it works fine again. So just make the w98/me installation amend hosts.sam and there won't be any issues with these OS.

Thanks,
Graham

the correct file that windows 95/98/98se/ME all recognise is HOSTS (no . no extension) in order for your computer to be reading HOSTS.sam something is misconfigured.

i would suggest you do this:
first download this file
https://www.winmxworld.com/files/original_hosts_file.zip
unzip it & place it in the windows folder if windows doesn't complain it's already there it's because this needed file is missing
(which may explain it reading the .SAMple file instead in desparation)
then reboot the entire computer (although restarting windows should be enough)

i probably did more testing of the current installers under win 9x than i did under XP lol
Blessed is he who expecteth nothing, for he shall not be disappointed.
