connected, but timing out
« on: July 12, 2007, 01:09:42 pm »
Hi folks.. another doof here that can't figure out a solution on his own...

I am connected after the patch (Online P=5 S=0 spm 6261) but my uploads window eventually fills with timeouts... no success downloading anything queued either. I am referring to files queued before the patch, as I am unable to search at this time, as well.

The thing is that the only change is the patch... router ports still forwarded as they were last week... rebooted after install... etc.

The link to the WinMX port tester shows mt TCP port closed and UDP possibly stealthed... that's the first time I used that link so I don't know what it would have said previously when all was well.

Here's my setup:
WinMX 3.54 beta 4 "patch online"
Motorola SB5120 cable modem
Belkin wireless G router (ports forwarded)
Primary user
Windows XP Pro SP2
Pent 4, 1 gig RAM

Primary User
Win XP Pro SP2
Comcast Cable Modem
WinMX v3.54 beta

Okay, I can't delete the topic... I found out what the heck was going on.

Forgive my terminology...

I checked the router setup page and found that there was only one computer logged into the router... this one. BUT, this computer's IP address had changed from 192.168.2.2 to 192.168.2.3. This was apparently due to the other machine booting first and then being shut down? I am totally guessing at this point, but I rebooted again after getting that computer online and viola! This machine has the 2.2 addy again. SIGH!

I just restarted WinMX, so wish me luck!

UNbelieveable.

Okay so I rechecked the IPs... I'm back to being number 3 on the network and the other machine is number 4... no number 2. I reforwarded the router and all that junk so I can Doad and Upload just fine now.

Off topic question:
Will my router (Belkin) reassign this computer back to 192.168.2.2 or can I rest assured that it will stay at .2.3?
Is there a way to force the router to assign this machine to a given address all the time?
As frustrated as I am right now, why am I perfectly happy to screw with this when my friends just tell me to throw the computer away?

i'm not sure if your router supports setting reserved ip's in it's dhcp setup.. if it does yes, if not, go to network settings in windows & set it as a static ip (don't forget to enter dns server addys if you do this method)
either will be permanent cure

hi Bud

Its possible that you dont have the correct ports forwarded in a router or DSL Modem that requires it (has built in router).  If this was working fine and then stoped its more likely that one of two things happened

1. you have a certain IP listed in the configuration pages of the router/modem and that has changed, if so recheck the IP and go change the WinMX rules accordingly.
2. that you have reinstalled WinMX or the Settings have changed and you may not have ports set correctly in that.  Make sure of what ports you where using and redo the settings in Incoming TCP and In/Out UDP to match the rules in your modem/router/firewalls.

If this is a new primary connection for you or you're unsure ..it could be that the ports NEED set up in the router or modem.  Have a look here:
https://www.winmxworld.com/tutorials/routers_info.html

This will help you to know what you need to configure your Router or Modem.  IF your still unsure post back here with your modem or router model and name and we'll help you out.

Ok Bud,

Here is a guide with step by step instructions for your model.  This Embarq brand is actually a Zyxel if i remember correctly.  Have a look at this page and it the screen shots dont match your router let me know

Hi Bud

Try that Me Here described and follow that to make sure your ports are forwarded correctly.

Also do you have any firewalls? If so please un-allow winmx and allow again. If any further problems please come and see us at:

Embarq users with a Belkin router: both the Embarq issued modem (all models) and Belkin routers use 192.168.2.x (specifically the modems use 192.168.2.1 for itself, and the rest of the subnet for DHCP).  The Belkin routers use similar.  Thus, you cannot get a stable connection because you will have two DHCP servers trying for the same network.  You must change the Belkin router (without the modem online) to use a seperate network, then connect the two normally.

alternate method.. disable NAT in the Embarq device & use the belkin to do all the routing
