Weird WinMX Behavior
« on: July 12, 2007, 04:15:28 pm »
I'm noticing that every few hours, my ques (Blue), becomes RED and I lost my position in the ques, this even in those with many users with the file (me in their respective ques).

In example I may have XYZ in blue with 30 users, some 1,2 ,3 etc, but suddenly, the users number start to drop and eventually my request is RED with no users. Happen both as a primary and as a secondary.

Then my transfers, in both directions, start to time out.

Can someone help?

This may be an ISP reset.
Does it happen periodically, or just randomly?

Cheers :P

What I'm noticing is that when these episodes occur, all people I'm queuing from have a 'waiting for network reply,' all at once, even if there are 10, 20, 30, 40, it doesn't matter. Then all start to time out and the file turns red. The only remaining are those from whom I download, then they also stop.

I usually 'search for alternates' when I look for a file, even if it is downloading and browse those from whom I que. Due my ISP restrictions and tricks, I got many time outs and downloads trickling to zero. SO , this give me a chance to renew my downloads.

When I press search and go to the file that just went through this, I notice the file is in yellow in the search screen. I press download but all 'waiting for network reply' time out and the file turn red from yellow in the transfer screen.

Also, when I browse a user during these episodes or do a 'who is' none of these tasks work.

An curious thing I also notice, although this is all the time and probably unrelated, (unless part of the tricks of the ISP) is that my downloads go to 0, but those uploading have 'speeds,' sometimes 4, 7, 10 KBS.  Then, sometimes, a spike in speed seemly compensating for the 'loss' speed comes, sometimes not, most times the file time out.

Another thing I notice is that wen I open the transfer screen, the connections and 'speeds' start to degrade.

This has all the makings of a ISP problem.. it could just be a cable gone bad or soemthing but it definally sounds like an issue with loosing the connection just long enough to lose MX... :S

During the las couple of weeks my ISP (Atlantic Broadband) had to send a tech rep 4 times to my building due low signal problems, there has been several general outages, however, this WinMX behavior has been happening from long before these events.

I will be getting a dedicated line with a business oriented ISP. They told me that they are network neutral and do not intervene in what you do with your line. Is pricey and they offered me a suggestion to get them deals for a finders fee, so I may have a vested interest if I recommend it here. Probably I will let all know that an alternative is available let them contact me privately. Still have to see if this ISP works. They sense that there is a big market for p2p users (I also use Skype, p2p, which degraded so much that is basically unusable with my current ISP,  which admitted throttling bandwidth).

I'm too far away for getting the 15 mbs down/1mbs up they can provide, but still can get 3mbs/756kbs. They have also high 'speed' wireless connections I'll be looking at.

In the meantime I renamed my ISP from Atlantic Broadband to Atlantic F***CK bad, terrible service.
