Flashing yellow works fine....
« on: July 16, 2007, 07:26:39 am »
Uninstalled old WinMX v3.53, downloaded and installed newly patched v3.53 on WIN98FE machine, rebooted, launched WinMX, gave OK to ZoneAlarm, and.................nothing.

Did not get the 'Welcome' banner, just the flashing yellow light.

Either all the Primaries are tied up, my ISP has just blocked access to the primaries, OR, something is wrong on my end.  Been using WinMX forever with no problems.  Always that first time.

Any ideas.

One other thing, making a Secondary connection.

Reinstall was the latest and greatest from 'Connections'.  Does it have to be patched?

Was realy looking forward to getting that 'Welcome' banner.

Just checked, and if I'm not mistaken, it appears to be flashing a little bit faster.  Could this mean some primaries are freeing up and it's about to connect, OR, could it just be that my computer is about to blow a gasket?

Sure could use some help out here.

Hi just4fun

I saw that you are running zonealarm. In zonealarm try un-allowing winmx and than allowing again.

Just4fun can you do this for me....

Go to the page and make sure you are getting the one titled mod3 when you download.  Id like you to download the Set up for Existing installs again for me today.

Download it, save it to the PC.
Now in the firewall i want you to once again remove WinMX from the allowed rules.
Make sure your XP Firewall is off if you use XP.
Now reinstall the patch and see wht happens.. be sure when Zonealarm asks you to let it through you say Yes and give it full permissions.

Post back and let us know what happens please.

Downloaded and saved- 3.0mod3-Patch-Only-Setup.exe - Removed WinMX from ZoneAlarms.  Installed downloaded patch - gave full ZoneAlarm permission (including Server) to WinMX.

After initial attempt to connect, ZoneAlarm icon in the SysTray did not show any outgoing connect activity.  It was like WinMX tried once and then stopped.  This is not how it used to work.  In the past, when MinMX was slow to connect, the ZoneAlarm icon would periodically show outgoing activity as WinMX tried to connect.  Something is not right here.

tried rebooting the pc? Win 98 likes remembering settings.. it can (often does) take a reboot to shift them.. particularly things like hosts entries referring to update bar....

I've rebooted a number of times - no help.

I did notice that the update wiped out about 1/2 of the host entries that Spybot Search & Destroy created, which Spybot rebuilt.  Is there a conflict there?

I also noted there wasn't any URL host entry after the patch posting message in the Hosts file.  I added one I found in another post with www.winmx.com.  That produced a one-line message in the WinMX header regarding  Patch......  I change the URL to www.winmxworld.com and no message came up.

Looks like a momentary connect and then------------nada.

I added 74.208.68.100   www.winmx.com  after the patch message so that entry in the Hosts file looks like so:

127.0.0.1   localhost
# The following line (if present) was added by the patch to load the update notification bar message
# If there is no entry here performance will not be affected,
# but you will not see notifications of patch updates
74.208.68.100   www.winmx.com

As I said, that got a message in the Update Bar, but when I changed the URL to www.winmxworld.com, no message appeared.

Line added to host file:

74.208.68.100   www.winmx.com

That gets message in Update Bar.   www.winmxworld.com does not.

Just to satisfy my curiosity, I went over to the dark(?) side and did the PiePatch install routine and 'VOILA' I got connected - and started to download and fill out some Incomplete stuff in my files.  That was exciting.  However, since I am a Win98 devotee, the Pie AutoUpdate app apparently will not work for me.

As a secondary, it is my understanding that I don't have to be concerned with the 'flooding' stuff, so updating the Pie installation probably isn't a need.  If any of what I have just stated is not true, please set me straight, I don't want to contribute to the downfall of the network.  AND, if anyone figures out what's wrong with my WinMXWorld patch install, do let me know how to fix it.

I like the concept pitched by WinMXWorld for their fix, but for some reason, I have not been able to get it to work.

there may be some conflict.. the installer removes entries for a reason... if you let spybot then rebuild them.. ......
so here's my suggestion, install, tell spybot to allow the changes.. reboot

& yes that hosts entry should refer to winmx.com it's a redirect instruction, tells your computer that winmx.com (which has no site up) is at the ip listed (which has a substitute site with an update bar) if you change it to winmxworld.com it won't get looked for by winmx.. which still thinks winmx.com is there

hi bobone507,

Id like you to first make sure you have the lates patch from here:
https://www.winmxworld.com/tutorials/connection.html

Get the top option since you already have WinMX Installed.  Before you install this patch, after its downloaded, be sure to remove WinMX from any firewall rules, especially the XP firewall if you use that.  Then when you install this patch it will restart your WinMX for you and the firewall should ask you if its ok to allow this again.. say yes.

Post back here when youve finished.

This post caught my eye because I'm having the exact same issues. Started a few days ago. WinMX has been running fine for nearly two years non-stop. Went to the Microsoft website for some stupid reason and it said it was 'chinking my system' for which updates I might need and or want to choose from. This process took a while so I quit. Then I tried my WinMX and it will no longer connect. I did the initial 'host file swap' back when Service Pack 2 came out. Can someone please link me to a current list of hosts that I can try? The flashing yellow light is depressing me.

On the same day I went to the microsoft website I also preformed a Spybot and Adaware scan with no problems. I also deleted Firefox and reinstalled it. Currently running with no XP firewall or auto updates and have Mcafee working in the background. That's new.

is mcafee just the av? or the security suite with firewall included (if the latter you'll need to allow winmx in it.. else it won't connect)..

Me Here's advice is also sound.. if you have been using a hosts file.. as the solution we offer there results in a more stable connection
