For some time now i have been asking many Administrators of WinMx World what we can do to get people back to using WinMx. I have thought of many ideas, but all have failed. I could not work out why Computer Users where not learning that WinMx is still functional, and then it HIT ME.

When users get told WinMx is back up and running obviously they are going to search on Google or some other Search Engine for WinMx, when do they come here all they can see is people bickering, insulting each other and downgrading each other. I know everyone is allowed to have their opinion but is there really any point in pointing the finger and blaming each other for various issues.

I have said so many times now, "Why can't everyone work together" but no one seems to listen as i do not have an high enough authority for people to take me seriously. I have been using WinMx for years now and i know many others have, however there are not the same amount of people sharing as there was before and there is not the same amount of users as there was before.

Forget stats and figures WinMx is being made to look like a joke. Its a Very Good P2P Program that many people like so instead of making abuse at each other lets all help get it back on track.

WINMX WORLD VS KINGMACRO
One thing i do not understand is the war that is currently taking place between WINMXWORLD & KINGMACRO. I do not care what either side have done but actually read the topics you are posting. One side says the other as done something and then the other replies with oh while where on that topic what about what you have done. This is more than childish and i know that many others think so.

KM i know at one point unless deleted you will read this if there are bugs in WCS it does not matter if you class them as urgent or not they need fixing. If people are having problems with the latest version of WCS thats telling you its urgent enough to be worked on.

THE NEW WINMXWORLD PATCH
For some time now i have heard rumors that there is going to be a new patch released. Everyone in WINMXWORLD says this is correct but its taking time. I look forward to hearing the full details about the new patch.

Why do you think folks like me (Pie supporter) are here and doing what they can alongside WmW users to pave the way for a new open source patch that will help unite the community and move us all forward, attracting new users along the way. It stands to reason if folks search on search engines and all they find is a whole array of Winmx sites all promoting ONE patch, they are likely to DL it and join the network. To make this possible a few things need to occur:

1. The patch needs to be completed
2. The cache software needs to be perfected and rolled out to willing users
3. When the vote comes up 'should the patch be open source?' we will need folks to back it, support it and vote for it to be OPEN SOURCE as this will not only allow it to be rolled out to all the interested sites, but it will also ensure singular users do not gain control of winmx and future development is possible.
4. KMware needs to be removed from users computers and they need to use the new patch & WCS hosts need to change to Ouka or similar.
5. Pie auto updater users need to be converted to new patch.
6. MXpie.info users need to be converted to the new blocking patch to ensure the flooders are removed. (this is crucial as mxpie.info team will not back any new patch that includes blocking so we will need to bypass them and appeal to their userbase)
7. We all need to ensure help and support for users of the new patch is linear and correct on all sites and rooms that may choose to offer help, this will ensure no further divisions and or arguements occur, and that users get any help they need correctly and simply so they get connected and get sharing asap.

Im sure there are other things that need to happen, but the best thing anyone can do it cross your fingers the programming team can complete the work on the patch/caches and then step up and vote YES to open source so we as a community may move on, a vote for no, means the ongoing issues we are all tired of and IMHO the ongoing demise of the network.

I like your positive attitude and perspective on how this should play out, however I see a few things there that aren't realistic...

It would not be possible to change the mxpie.info user base without the users agreeing and that is how everything got to where it is now, is by user choice. I am strongly against their ideas of how a patch should be used or what it contains, but there are people who chose that for whatever reason and unless they decide different our hands will be tied on that.

Also, the idea of open source is not a unified idea either. There are those of us like myself who would love to see the entire community on a blocking patch but do not agree with the risk associated with open sourcing it. So even in different camps, there are seperate ideas of how it should play out.

#1 and #2 are of course priority.
#3 will have a lot of debate attached to it.
#4 is taking care of itself, and people are gonna move away from KMware unless he fixes the bug in WCS and makes major changes to regain the trust of the people.
#5 is again not as easy as I would like.
#6 will only happen when those people decide blocking is not the devil.
#7 is a great thing and I would like to see universal standards on how people are helped as you said, across all help rooms.

To be honest, I would be more than happy to take part in a lot of the areas if I were sure it would not be released open source. To me that is letting a big genie out of a bottle that cannot be put back in. We know that having closed source has not caused problems other than it all being left in one person's hands. If it were in the hands of a select few, that would no longer be a problem. The issue becomes, which select few can be trusted not to leak the source? There are good reasons why programs are compiled, and code is obscured when it comes to programming. It prevents others from changing and rereleasing things that are dangerous, and in this case, it would prevent harming the network by people that have ill will, or like Sabre, taking advantage of ANY amount of power he can get.

We see very well how much a small bug in WCS has caused a big problem, and we all remember nushi poison and other discoveries... WCS bug was not even intentional, but look at the issue. And Nushi poison was before anyone even had a good idea about the wpn or how it worked.. Just think of how quickly MX would drop if the internal workings of WinMX were published publicly. And the source to the patch shows all that is needed to cripple winmx.

I know the idea is to unite the community and spread the power so no one person can drop everything, but what would that matter if winmx itself were already compromised and the network was unusable?

I hear your points scyre, and i understand your concerns over open source, but in my opinion closed source will bring up the same trust issues, the same bickering and will leave a limited few holding the community cards, i for one would not be content with a Sabre & KM mk2 senario, and thats a real possibility.

As for addressing the mxpie.info users thats easier than you might think, but thats a topic for another time.

It is kinda the lesser of 2 evils. But if everyone were to just stop and think about it, we have never had the source to winmx itself or many other programs but we have always trusted it and used it...

The demand for open source seems to be more of a power struggle anymore, and I really don't know why. I know that people like Sabre want power just to be a bully cause he sucks as a person, and has to try to prove himself over a bunch of electrons. And other people out there are MORE mentally\maturity challenged. (I know you're thinking "How can someone be worse?!" lmao)

But rather than give any of these people the opportunity (that I know they would jump on) to do serious damage to the network, I would rather they all speculate about "magical hidden devices" embedded that can "hijack your PC, steal your money, or even kick your dog from a remote location!"

I just don't wanna spend the next 2 years saying "damn... we really messed up when we let everyone have the family jewels." ...And never be able to patch all of the exploits and leaks people uncover and use to kill the network.

When I think about that possibility, I would rather them keep bitching for the next 2 years and eventually either realize they are wrong, or just move on so the rest of us can enjoy the network.

If there were not already so many people coming out of the woodwork to try to make all of this work to their advantage, I would feel differently. The idea of a unified community where everyone is happy would be terrific, and I would love to see that day. But the truth is, we won't get there with open source.

Before winmx.com ever went down by Kevin's own hand, I cannot remember a time where there was no mistrust or fighting amongst people. It will always be that way. It is human nature. And nothing will change that. So opening the source to the public still won't change all that...it will just make the idiots more dangerous...

I am, however, happy to hear that you have ideas about switching the mxpie.info users. If we can get something stable and reliable, and agreeable, then they could be brought out of the dark ages lol

Closed source = 1 person knowing how it works.
Open source = any person getting it and seeing how it works.

What about in somewhere in between.   A select group of trusted people who know the source.   And since this post is about people starting to get along and not fighting, then representatives from all sides will be needed.

As you said Nobby, you would not be content with a "Sabre amd KM mk2 senario", so I would have to think you would need to be included, as being from one of the pie camps (I know they split in 2, but I didn't really follow who went where).

How's things down under? This kind of sounds like back when Frontcode first pulled the plug on us. Kevin Hearn was a pretty smart cookie though, he knew that with the way the chat side was set up that we could survive as a community without him and Frontcode. We just had to work together and pull ourselves up by our bootstraps. You're right, closed source won't work. We found that out with KM's .dll if you are going closed source you have to be able to have some trust in the person who created the patch. Why not use the chat side and pull together the people who have the knowledge about the workings of MX, people who have been around the community for a long time, those who care about the community and seeing it grow. When you have a lot of input it is good, if you get together a small group to "run things" eventually egos will emerge and infighting will begin. Lord knows that WinMX has already seen too many battles. Perhaps a "Hosts" council would be a good place to start. Invite the Hosts from all channels to be involved, have them comb their rooms for people with the technical knowledge to help us move forward and reclaim the great community that once was WinMX. We must never forget that WinMX is the users, without them the program itself is nothing.

I like this. It is very encouraging to see a thread like this and also to see more than one person from another side of the fence. Let's face it Nobby's just not that pretty. I'm not crazy about the idea of an opensource patch but I think bug was right in another thread. Even closed source the cartel will more than likely have it picked apart and tested for vulnerabilities. Unfortunately we are all now seeing the reprocutions of an individual user being in control. It almost will never turn out pretty. I like what Mick said about maybe a group comprised of individuals from both camps maybe knowing the source but not making it public also. There are going to be drawbacks to just about any plan you can come up with. All one can ask is that if this happens then everyone please agree to disagree on certain issues and try to understand the reasons why one person may not like a certain idea. Something I have to work on as well as others I know is it can't be taken so personally that it gets in the way of good thinking. If the personal approach doesn't work then I and others need to learn to take a professional stance and think in a way that says "Ok.. Joe wants "this" but I don't. If I don't give Joe a little bit of what he's asking for then I am wrong to even think of asking Joe for what I feel I need and he'll be mad at me and probably say no regardless of how good an idea I may have". I have used this program for as long as I can remember almost, I would like to keep using it. To everyone discussing this thread and WinMX's future thank you for a light note to post on and I hope that soon we can say we are an even bigger family. Long as noone tries to take my room. Just had it decorated last week.

I need to make it clear that I have never had a problem with most members of WmW. My problem was mainly with one person. I never posted in this forum because I won't come to your house to flame or cause you any grief when my problem was not with the forum at large. When Frontcode went down and we thought all was lost, users from every walk of life pulled together, we struggled through the first couple of days doing everything we could to keep a network we loved alive. We refused to be shut off from the friends that we had made over the years in chats and through sharing. We as a community, even as diverse as we are, had a true bond with each other. It was that spirit of survival and our will to defeat the forces of the RIAA/MPAA that carried us through those dark days. Closed scource or Open scource makes little difference, our enemies have the money, the rescources, the technology, and the determination to decompile and examine any patch that we can come up with. By all the camps working together as one camp we have a chance of defeating our enemies at their own game. We have to unite, we have to stand firm. The time has come to put aside our petty differences, put aside our egos, and face the enemy head on as a solid force to be reckoned with. We aren't just dealing with the issue of sharing files, we deal with the issue of our right to electronic free speech. If we lose the battle we have not only lost the war for ourselves but also for future generations of file sharers. We must all keep open minds, bury old grudges, extend the olive branch, and function as a community. This is our key to survival. As far as some of the comments I have made in reference to the Brits and Aussies, please understand that it was all in fun, I have nothing against either the Brits or the Aussies.
