What does the KM war mean to the ordinary user?
« on: September 15, 2007, 06:10:36 pm »
I've been struggling to make head or tail of this war between King Macro and everyone else, but since I have only a marginal understanding of the guts of WinMX the whole matter has left me baffled. I don't understand the jargon and mysterious acronyms that people are bandying about in these threads, so please let me ask some kindergarten level questions, as I'm sure there are many beside me who don't understand what is going on, or what we should do.

Is the patch that has been distributed by WinMX World to keep MX going now null and void?
Is the impact of the removal of KM's patch confined only to the chat rooms, or does it cross over to the p2p file sharings?
Is there a new patch to make WinMX keep going, or doesn't it matter unless one visits the chat rooms? (Which I don't because I find them all too bewildering to use).

I don't want to enter into the politics of this war; I just want to share files and collect a few as well. People are still uploading from me, but usage seems down from what it was a few days ago. Is this related to this war?

Thanks for any clarification about any of this.

The patch will remain to work, KM just seems to be mad they're just using a hexed version of his old patch. He just wants them to make something to call their own, which they're doing. Hopefully it'll be done some time soon, but I have no clue how far along it is.

The patch effects filesharing and the chat rooms, the patch is what makes winmx connect to the wpn. The network that does it all, without it. Chat room server's can't report their room to the network. So you'd get no list to channels. You'd have to know the channel name to get in, good thing about favorites.

You also wouldn't be able to connect to share or get any kind of files, so it'd become a useless program if you didn't have the network to connect to.

I believe it'll always be around. It hasn't come this far for nothing, no p2p program has ever done anything like WinMX has. Specially after the RIAA went through all of that to shut it down, lol.

In short do nothing until advised in the update bar of the need to do so, all network operations working fine atm, so although we have experienced a small drop in users due to the patch and WCS games KM decided to play thats just hard luck and we shall plod on regardless as I,m sure most users will.

Cheers folks for keeping the faith and staying with us in times of trouble  8)
