uploads dont work
« on: October 02, 2007, 02:23:19 pm »
Hi,
i started WinMX after a long time.
Now i have the problem that all uploads dont work.

- Downloads work
- Router is configured for WinMX
- Firewall (Kerio) is configured for WinMX
- I also turned Firewall and Antivir (AVG 7.5) off but that didnt help
- I cant find anything in WinMX settings that looks bad

Anyone has any idea??

Did you use the latest patch as of july 2007 ??? avalable here
https://patch.winmxconex.com/
If not download & load up the Setup for Existing Installs of WinMX this may help
also what router is it you are using and what isp & operating system on your pc ?

Sometimes when ppl have not used winmx in a while a complete  uninstall & fresh install is worth a go including deleting the winmx folder in your c/drive ( has worked for some & got them up & running)

Also check that your xp firewall is not running at the same time as your Kerio one as the xp one has a habbit of starting randomly and causing conflicts when 2 are running i would personaly bin the kerio one as xp is a perfectly good firewall when configured anyway

just checked out keiro and found this in there technical data

Quote
• Enhanced Peer-to-Peer Blocking: Nowadays, more advanced peer-to-peer (P2P) applications tunnel through well-known ports such as port 80, or encrypt data to avoid being blocked or detected. In addition to its existing P2P blocking capabilities, Kerio WinRoute Firewall adds payload analysis and improved adaptive P2P blocking that can identify and block P2P traffic more effectively than port analysis.

Kerio WinRoute Firewall uses payload analysis on all ports to detect P2P traffic on well-known and unknown ports. Then it uses the improved behavior analysis to help block encrypted P2P traffic. The behavioral analysis initially monitors and determines normal traffic behavior. As a host exhibits suspicious P2P-like behavior the security policy for the host tightens. For example, a host that is using legitimate applications will have a certain number of ports being used. But when a host launches a P2P application, multiple connections are made on various ports to search for and connect to other P2P hosts. Both P2P blocking techniques have proven to be highly effective in blocking and adapting to evolving P2P applications.

While P2P applications continue to evolve in bypassing network security measures, the potential threats and liabilities P2P networks pose are also increasing. Although P2P applications have many legitimate uses, they can overload Internet bandwidth, expose confidential data, allow malware to infiltrate the network, compromise security compliance, and impose legal liability for illegally sharing copyright material. With new and enhanced P2P blocking technologies, Kerio WinRoute Firewall adds another layer to its unified network security to provide enterprise-level protection for small to medium-sized organisations.

there is a possibility that even though you closed your firewall that something is still working from it in the background blocking in some way i have found this myself in the past trying out diffrent firewalls as the firewall you use is so p2p unfriendly i would uninstall it
If you are not happy with xp firewall there is a winmx friendly one called sygate avalable from here for free
http://www.tucows.com/preview/213160

if this is not the case
what isp are you using & is this a diffrent isp since you last used winmx ? as this sounds like a port blocking system employed by some providers these days
might be worth changing your ports to see if this makes any kind of difference click on the link here and give it a go
https://www.winmxworld.com/tutorials/changing_port_numbers.html

Hope this helps if not post back and i'm sure we can get to the bottom of it

Well i didnt use WinMx for a very long time.
I had to reinstall it. So its a completely new file.

I use same isp since i am online.

I am sure that XP-firewall is off.

As i checked Kerio i didnt just close it by command. I closed everything of kerio in my task manager. So i think there wasnt anything still running.

But as soon i have a bit time i can try to uninstall it to be sure.

I might also add here that although your really sure that the router is set correctly we can all make mistakes Ive done it my self and Ive helped set up many routers.  At this time i don't see a guide in English for your model to look at some areas that could be problems but if your ISP isnt blocking and I did check we have a Moderator on that same ISP so Im almost sure they are not.. then it almost has to be one of two things firewall or router.

So I would like to just mention a couple things here and this is not to insult just to have you double check these things for me..

Most routers ask you for a LAN IP address or Private Address to forward traffic to, often folks set this to the Default Gateway Address.  Could you for me please go to
Start > Run > type in                cmd
Then OK
In the black box type in              ipconfig
Hit Enter key.

Make sure that if your model requires an IP address that it is the same address listed in the command prompt as 'IP Address' and not using the default gateway address.
Also sometimes during reboot this address can change on you and leave your rules useless so making sure it matches cant hurt if yours uses this method.

Also make sure that the ports you have set two rules and NOT a range of addresses ie:
WinMX TCP 6699 for your IP Address  &
WinMX UDP 6257 for your IP Address

setting up ranges is opening holes that don't need to be and can cause (with some models) the rules not to work.  Then go and make sure those ports you used match what is set up in WInMX
WinMX Settings > Incoming TCP = Listen on port 6699
WinMX Settings > In/Out UDP = Send and receive on port 6257  (or what ever non standard ports you choose to use)

isp is T-Online

And yes, i think i am sure the router is set correctly.
I found a very detailed advice how to configure my router for WinMx on the german part of this forum.
I checked it 3 times to be sure i did it correctly.
I used the standard port in router- and WinMx-settings.

And i uninstalled Kerio and AVG7.5 but uploads still didnt work.

OK i tried it with another PC.

- Complete new install of WinXP
- New install of WinMX
- No Firewall
- No AntiVir
- Configured router for WinMx on this PC

-> Downloads worked ; Uploads didnt  ( i start to think i need an exorcist ^^)

Is there anything in WinMx settings i could made wrong beside the ports?

hi ???

Uploads are usually going to be a problem with ports or the ISP.  One thing I thing would be a good idea for now, is to set up your WinMX as a passive secondary to test.  This should tell us if it is the router/ports causing it or the ISP.  This way doesn't require ports to work.

On either machine go to WinMX Settings > Incoming TCP >  Set this to 'Unable to listen...'
Then click on In/Out UDP >  Set this the same way 'Unable to send or receive...'

Restart WinMX in secondary and see if uploads still fail.

Post back after this and let us know how this went pz.

Well that tells us that it is NOT your ISP blocking them.. so it has to be something in the router config or firewall configs ???,

If you want to try those again let me know.. running like you are will work for 80% of traffic up or down for you.. so i'll leave it to you.

Well i configured the router exactly like i saw it in this forum.
Thats worked on the guys router that asked. So i think it has to work on my router (exactly same as his) too.

And i tried without any firewall installed.

So if "secondary" with ports set in WinMx wasnt a fault i realy dont know what i still could try.

Hello,
since a few days ago I have exactly the same problem like ???. I checked the XP firewall, the antivirus program, the router and my IP, I used different ports and now I really have no clue what to do.
And btw Winmx isn't my only P2P programm where TCP port isn't working anymore.(download is working perfect but no upload)
My ISP is T-Online too.
So anyone who has any ideas??

Hi

Do you have a spare router?

If you do, do you get the same results?

The only reason I am asking as this sounds like a similar problem I had. Uploads were working ok and I had no downloads the problem end up been noise on the line and the router died.

Please post and let me know how you get on. :D
