Do WinMX actually require any UDP ports open?
« on: January 26, 2008, 07:18:01 am »
Due to some restrictions from my ISP, I have, in addition to the latest WinMX patch, used both Unable to accept incoming TCP connections and Unable to send or receive UDP datagrams on any port to be able to connect, search and download.
However, now I can't get WinMX to connect at all, and I even can't connect to the WinMX help chat room (WinMXWorld.com Help_B4646A57BABE)...
When using the TCPView program, I just noticed that ANY process using UDP protocol get NO remote address on the network (shown as *:* only), so I suspect my ISP now have blocked ALL UDP ports, which I also have noticed on some other programs, for example do time synchronization in Windows (using UDP port 123) no longer work and Windows Live Messenger has changed behaviour when connecting...
Therefore, if ALL UDP ports are blocked, is it then impossible to get WinMX to connect even by using the Unable to ... settings...?

stigbye, If you are using windows xp with service pack2, run a cmd window and type in netstat -an. You w ill see all the UDP ports your computer uses at the bottom, my winmx open UDP port shows there as 0.0.0.0:6257   *:* which is normal.

(Sorry for delayed reply as I've been away for almost three weeks, and I'm also using a new member name)

By using TCPView (that have some advantages over netstat), I may find entries like these:

Process            Protocol   Local address           Remote address          State
WinMX.exe:4004     UDP        0.0.0.0:1805            *:*
WinMX.exe:4004     UDP        127.0.0.1:1806          *:*
WinMX.exe:4004     TCP        192.168.100.140:1502    87.118.100.45:7952      SYN_SENT
WinMX.exe:4004     TCP        192.168.100.140:1513    74.208.71.148:7930      SYN_SENT
WinMX.exe:4004     TCP        192.168.100.140:1520    192.168.100.140:7951    SYN_SENT

I've tried several solutions to rule out possible local problems, e.g. to temporarily disable firewalls and similar to check for possible incorrect
settings and/or configurations, but WinMX cannot connect, i.e. WinMX is just constantly searching for network connections...

Regarding the WinMX patch, I see that Patch Online is shown in the bar field at top of WinMX window, so it appear that the patch is correct installed and operating...

Hi stigbye,

Winmx doesn't requitre ANY ports at all to connect to the network initially, so in theory you should be able to connect just fine.
Could you tell us a little more about your configuration maybe, like which OS version you're using etc?
There are some small problems with some OS like win98 which needs a little workaround to get it to connect,
so if we know some more maybe we can find out what's wrong?

You should be able to come by the chatroom without being connected btw by putting the room address in your filter bar above the channellist,
so feel free to drop by and maybe talk about things some more.
Here's the room address to copy and paste:

Hi there

Obviously I have the same connection problem... Can you share what is the final solution that works out for you?

Many thanx in advance!
