A Croatian college student has created a utility that installs a seriously stripped-down Windows Vista, saying the heft of Microsoft Corp.'s biggest desktop operating system is just too big to believe.

The free program vLite lets users pick and choose which Vista components, hot fixes, drivers and even language packs are installed, then builds a disk image that can be burned to a DVD for unattended installation of the operating system.
Crafting vLite wasn't easy, he said. But the time Nuhagic spent on its predecessor, nLite, which similarly squeezes Windows 2000 and Windows XP, paid off in spades. "Since I had four years of experience with tampering [with] older Windows, it was a lot easier than nLite," Nuhagic said of the development of vLite. "Also, it was easier than in XP

Having seen how many folks "roll their own" operating system disks for XP, I though maybe some folks would like to look over the Vista version release, a tenfold reduction in bloat has been claimed by one user.

Think i will stick by my customised black xp for the for the imediate future ....so much less hassle and a hell of a lot faster to run and use.

im sticking with 2k for the forseeable future... when it quits working (cant be installed on new hardware) ill switch to a full linux environment (2 of 4 of my machines run linux as is... the other runs dos 7.10 standalone ... only one runs windows)... or install reactos if i do still need a wintendo for some odd reason... im not shelling out any $$$ for windows and im not going to fight with WGA...
