Whats going on? The modem is a Huawei Smart AX MT882 . I also got the new cdrom as there was a batch that weren't right,so they sent that too.Ever since I installed it,I have not been d/loading at all in WinMX.Can anyone help me please?

Go to the link below and follow the instructions for port forwarding for your router

http://portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/Huawei/SmartAX-MT882/WinMX.htm

If that does not help try using the old modem if that works fine you have your answer to the problem ..... let us know if this is the case and perhaps we can sort something out.

I am also getting timing outs and very slow service.   I notice that this didn't happen early yesterday morning until 9.00am GMT
I've also heard that some music publishers are swamping the network, so wonder if this is the reason! Can anyone help? is there a way round it?

Usually when there are times you see performance on WInMX drop its down to your ISP throttling it during what they consider peak times.
For example Im on BT Business and our speeds both up and down slow during the hours of 8.30pm - 11.30 pm nightly and Sundays are about like that all day.

As for the fake files that are flooded onto the network that happens 24/7 there are no special times, its easy enough to avoid tho make sure the patch you're using says in the update bar: Patch Online

If not get a version that does protect and block those files from here:
WinMX Patch Page

WinMX doesn't support upnp forwarding, simply enabling upnp in router isn't enough like with newer programs, i'm afraid you'll have to forward ports manually.. excellent guides can be found for doing so at http://www.portforward.com/

Thanks for help-
I do have a patch tho'
There is a massive difference before and after the start of business. This morning, after we put clocks forward, the 'throttling' started to bite at 10am. This suggests that it's not because of UK users starting up, since they'd have done  that at 9am. I strongly suspect there is a block being put on downloading from external sites outside of the UK, by 'flooding ' the network! Unless my ISP is outside the UK, which I'm sure isn't the case!
Any other ideas, experiences?

Alfonsoflea,

I still think that this is down to your ISP throttling you but I feel your getting some things mixed up here so let me  try to explain them to you better.

First the 'flooding'..There are probably some better places to learn more about it and I'll provide you those links as well here, but the first thing to understand is that WinMX is a Decentralized network, meaning when you connect to the WPN (WinMX Protocol Network) you are actually connecting to other ppl in the world.  There is no central server anywhere that your ISP could 'block' and you're just as likely to connect to someone in Japan as you are Italy, as you are someone in your own back yard here in the UK.  The flooding is more just what the term implies flooding of fake files onto the network being broadcast as actual shared files when in fact they never download (or are not what they say they are if they do) and the patch your on now blocks those flooders from connecting to you and from your searches.

Top Paragraphs here Explain about the fakes.
The Damage they 'are' capable of explained here
How this Network works decentralized.

I  think then that you can see they wont be causing this issue for you and the patch you have installed should say Patch Online, which has built in protection from this for you.

The other issue one would look at here is does this happen 24/7 which you mentioned right off that is does happen during times of the day, now I'll grant you that most ISP's do the throttling during peak times of the day which are generally in the early evening until just before midnight and that speeds are normal in other times, odd time for them to throttle.

The only other explanation for your speed changes being like clock work would be that you have something else using a large amount of bandwidth during those times, such as torrents or news group.  Or if you have more then one PC running any p2p software its possible that your home network has elected the other PC as the 'boss' so to speak giving it the majority of your bandwidth, but even still then that PC would be running WinMX with uploads and downloads going or a Torrent, newsgroup something that uses lots of bandwidth.

If thats not the case and its only this PC using bandwidth I'd bet a fair amount your ISP is in fact doing this and the system they use didnt change with the times or is not based on time per say but based on the switch being flipped.  :S

I hope this helped you understand better.
In doing some research about your ISP i found that they are actually owned by Carphone Warehouse and you may have even signed up under the company named TalkTalk.  Normally on this site and in the help room we hear first hand about the companies that do this to its customers and TalkTalk is widely known for throttling and poor p2p service.  Unfortunelly the more I learn the more I'm convinced they are indeed doing this to you on WinMX.

I'm like so many other people and I can't upload anything-it keeps timing out. I can download fine, though.

Windows XP home edition, no firewall, with a router.

I have tried port forwarding and patches and nothing seems to be working. I'm kind of a novice at this sort of thing, so any help you can give me would be very much appreciated.

I have a Belkin F5D7230-4 router connected to a cable modem> I have the PC configuration software from portforward.com, and I've tried to put in ranges to see what happens, but nothing. Do I need to try specific ports to see if it works? Again, thank you for any help you can give me.

Hi ratgirl...XP does have a firewall included and can still block things while even turned off. You might want to have a look at the links below and give this a try.

Post back how you made out... if this doesn't help, somebody will get ypu sorted

If it is the same uploaders i would guess it is down to there end.... try searching out the same/simular  file from a different user and giving that a go

why are uploaders being refused? I can't work out why the reason is. I just feel very guilty when I am downloading OK.
