UK News - BT to Offer ADSL 2
« on: May 01, 2008, 09:15:39 am »
Amid much publicity BT have announced they will be offering ADSL 2 to customers in the near future.

Quote
Faster broadband speeds could soon be on offer to a limited number of people in the UK as BT starts offering access to its 21st Century Network.
BT Wholesale will be offering its ADSL2+ technology to Internet Service Providers (ISPs) from this week.

But only a million households will be able to get access to the service, which offers speeds of up to 24Mbps.
Jupiter analyst Ian Fogg said the roll-out was "tardy" and available to "a tiny fraction" of UK households.

BT said ADSL2+ would reach a "potential footprint of 10 million homes and businesses by the spring of 2009".
The company could give no guarantee that customers would get the theoretical maximum 24Mbps speed promised by ADSL2+.

What being missed here is that faster single sided connections are unlikely to relieve the current bottleneck in last leg traffic, ADSL is an inherently flawed transmission model for the future due to its non-symmetrical nature, whilst fine for downloads its uploading capability is often very poor and as we have seen this impacts the delivery of many new protocols and services that are so far unable to utilise the upstream with any sort of efficiency, in short we are seeing last generation technology taken to its peak rather than the deployment of fibre lines to the customer and thats whats really needed to break away from the current crisis threatening to cause annoyance and frustration for the foreseeable future.

And throttling, They are ripping the back out the current infastructor, you get adsl2 24meg but at 5pm we drop you to 512k. I dont think so. If you know anything about BT although the speeds sound nice the sting is a killer. An let me guess, 24 month contracts again..   Wont touch them with a barge pole till they sort their shit out.

Well, im with BT, just cut a deal to reduce my bill by more than £7 a month, and only for a 12 month contract. I have never noticed any throttling of my service at all, but then perhaps i dont DL as much as you folks? That said, i really see no need at this point to consider a 24mbps, i have 6.5mbps at the moment and it does everything i could need at this time. I will wait till all the fuss dies down, then grab the fast connection at a minimal monthly increase if any.

The trick is always to claim you are leaving for another ISP, and always call on Tuesdays or Wednesdays!
